Once again, awake, Inei sat up, his senses gradually returning to him. Beside him, a petite girl stared intently, her unwavering gaze causing his face to flush and his breath to quicken.
'Do... I have a fever?' Inei inquired, perplexed, as he lightly touched his forehead, finding no signs of illness. Something else must be making him feel this way.
Snap! Sora clicked her fingers, successfully recapturing Inei's attention. Wearily, he turned to face her as her eyes shimmered with determination.
"Who are you?" she demanded, her voice firm and resolute, leaving no room for evasive answers. Inei sighed, realizing he had gotten himself entangled in something unexpected.
"I'm Inei," he replied, his response met with a momentary dazzled expression from Sora, followed by a vehement shake of her head.
"No! What I mean is... What were you doing out there in the blizzard? All by yourself!?" Her concern was evident, but her words puzzled him. He struggled to comprehend her inquiry fully.
"That... Umm... I was... Lost?" Inei mumbled, feeling acutely aware of his inability to articulate his situation adequately.
"That's a terrible excuse!" Sora retorted, refusing to accept his response. However, Inei was telling the truth; he had indeed lost his way to Shirakawa village amidst the unforgiving blizzard.
"But I really was," he grimaced, hoping to convey the sincerity of his words. Yet, Sora remained unconvinced, clearly finding it hard to believe a child of similar age could brave such harsh weather and undertake such a treacherous journey.
"Don't lie..." she whispered, looking around the room cautiously to ensure no one overheard. "I saw a weapon with you... Tell me the truth." Her words held an air of secrecy and suspicion as she leaned in close to his ear.
Inei's eyes widened slightly, realizing she must be referring to his sword.
"Wher-"
Inei panicked, but Sora swiftly covered his mouth with her hand, silencing him. The Demon Slayer took a deep breath, trying to regain composure. Losing his sword was akin to tearing his soul apart; it was an integral part of him.
"It's safe. I have hidden it near the outskirts of the village," Sora assured him, and Inei heaved a sigh of relief. The thought of facing a Demon without his Amethyst blade left him feeling defenseless and vulnerable. Suppressing his anxiety, he lowered his gaze.
"Now, explain," Sora demanded, determined to get answers. Inei shook his head slightly, his expression stoic.
"I can't," he muttered, aware of the dire consequences that could befall him if he revealed his identity as a Demon Slayer. But Sora was not one to give up easily; she persisted.
"If you don't, I'll tell Grandpa about that weapon of yours," she threatened, her words causing Inei's heart to pound, and a hint of emptiness filled his eyes. Part of him wanted to silence her immediately, but he knew that was not an option. The ever-watchful Kusagai crows were scrutinizing his every move and word.
Torn between conflicting desires to silence her and to escape the situation entirely, he frowned before managing a faint smile, raising his head to meet her gaze.
"Please... I will tell you, but give me some time," Inei pleaded, hoping to buy himself enough respite to figure out a way forward.
Recognizing his hesitation to reveal his hidden secrets, Sora reluctantly agreed. Although she had no intention of betraying him to her Grandpa, she felt compelled to at least try to elicit the truth.
"Fine. But you have to promise," she stated, locking eyes with him.
"I promise on my Blade," Inei replied, nodding solemnly. As Sora hurriedly left the room, summoned by her grandfather, a cold glint flashed through Inei's raven eyes.
'Now, how to get the hell out of here?' he pondered, determined to find a way to escape this precarious situation.
