Chapitre 293: Mest and Wendy Vs. Juvia and Lisanna

Earth Land, Ishgar, Kingdom of Fiore, Tenrou Island.

December 15, x784.

After the battle between Fried, Bickslow, Evergreen and Elfman concluded, the action in the caves cooled down for a while. Considering the fact that most of the other participants had to wait on the ship for Fried's [Enchantment] to time out.

During that time, Mest and Wendy, after making it to the battle area of their selected cave, had a lot of time to kill. And thanks to Wendy's timid personality, mixed with Ur's constant warnings, she was quite wary of Mest. So, the duo spent most of their time sitting in silence. Until Wendy took it upon herself to break that silence.

"Um… Excuse me…." Wendy said timidly with her head lowered.

"Hmm…? Yes?" Mest Replied, looking in Wendy's direction.

"Uh… Um… I… Can… Um… I mean, Can I… ask you a question?" Wendy stammered out.

"Sure, go ahead." Mest replied with a nod.

"Why… did you choose… me… to be your partner, Mest?" Wendy asked, finally raising her head to look at Mest.

Seeing the wary look in Wendy's eyes mixed with the slightly guarded posture, Mest was taken aback. Still, he tried to answer her question calmly.

"It's because I thought your ability to heal would be quite useful." Mest replied with a small smile. "And after what happened when we arrived on the beach, that thought turned out to be correct."

"Really?" Wendy asked, sounding quite skeptical.

"Really." Mest replied with a nod.

"Are you sure that's… the only reason?" Wendy asked, her skepticism growing with every moment.

"What other reason would there be?" Mest asked curiously.

"Are you sure it's not because you're a… a… a…" Wendy began to say. But when she got to the end, her face reddened, and she began to studder.

Seeing Wendy's state, Mest was even more curious.

'I wonder if she's gonna ask me if it's because I'm Mystogan's disciple.' Mest thought to himself. 'I did hear a rumor that Mystogan had saved her when she was lost in a forest about seven years ago. He introduced her to Cait Shelter, too, now that I think about it. I mean, it's not like I could tell her the real reason that teaming up with someone who had been with the guild for a while might see through my cover, right?'

Meanwhile, as Mest wondered what Wendy was going to say, the girl in question took a deep breath to calm herself down, though the blush on her face did not disappear, before blurting out her question in one go.

"Are you sure it's not because you're a loli-con?" Wendy shouted at the top of her lungs with all her might.

*Cough!*

*Splatter!*

*Thud!*

As soon as Mest's mind registered what Wendy asked him, he immediately coughed out a mouthful of blood all over the cave floor before collapsing with lifeless eyes.

"Huh?" Wendy exclaimed after she finally opened her eyes and saw the blood and Mest, who looked as if he would lose consciousness at any moment. "Mest, are you okay? What happened to you? Did the other team show up and sneak attack you?"

'Oh, I was sneak attacked, alright.' Mest thought while the world around him spun violently. 'Unfortunately, I was hit by friendly fire.'

"Come on, Mest, pull yourself together!" Wendy shouted as she placed her hands on Mest's chest. "[Heal]… Huh? Why isn't it working? [Heal]! [Heal]!"

'Of course, it's not working.' Mest thought to himself while he watched Wendy fuss over him. 'There's no magic in existence that can heal heartache.'

Meanwhile, from the other entrance to the battle room, Juvia and Lisanna finally arrived to see who their opponents would be. But when they saw the current happenings in the area, they were thoroughly flabbergasted.

"What's going on?" Lisanna asked in a confused tone.

"Uh... Juvia isn't sure…" Juvia replied.

"Should we go help them?" Lisanna asked.

"Maybe?" Juvia replied while tilting her head in confusion. "Does this mean that Juvia won?"

"That's a good question." Lisanna asked as she and Juvia started walking towards their downed opponents.

At the same time, after hearing the sound of footsteps, Mest and Wendy finally realized they were not alone in the battle section of the cave, anymore. Looking towards the sound, they finally saw who their opponents were.

"It's Juvia and Lisanna, huh?" Mest said, forcing himself into an upright position.

"Mest, be careful." Wendy said, rushing to support her partner. "You just coughed up blood. Maybe should lay down, you're in no condition to fight."

"Coughed up blood?" Juvia and Lisanna exclaimed simultaneously.

A moment later, Lisanna and Juvia noticed the blood that had been splattered in front of Mest.

"Yeah, Wendy's right, it's not worth pushing yourself this hard." Lisanna said in a concerned tone.

"Yes." Juvia agreed with a nod. "Let Juvia take you to receive medical attention."

Hearing the concern from the three girls, Mest, who was actually in his Doranbolt persona at the moment, felt a strange, fuzzy feeling in his chest. It's not every day you receive such concern from people who you despise… or at the very least, do not like.

Unfortunately, that feeling was replaced with irritation quickly enough.

"By the way, how did you end up like this, Mest." Lisanna asked curiously as she and Juvia both leaned down to help Mest up.

"That's the weird thing." Wendy said. "Before this happened, he seemed perfectly fine. I mean, my [Healing Magic] won't even work on him. But after I asked him if he was a---"

Before Wendy could finish, Mest shot to his feet as if there were nothing wrong with him and covered her mouth at lightning speed.

"You two really don't need to worry about me." Mest said with an ugly smile and blood still dripping from his lips. Then, using his free hand, he wiped the blood before he continued. "But as you can see, I'm just fine."

"Seeing how quickly Mest recovered, Lisanna and Juvia felt relief. Still, they both noticed that his recovery seemed to be tied to what Wendy was about to say.

'I'''/ Juvia will have to ask Wendy about it later.' Lisanna and Juvia thought at the same time.

"Anyway, why don't we get on with the battle?" Mest asked, his ugly smile starting to twitch when he noticed the skeptical glances Lisanna and Juvia were throwing his way.

'Would it be wrong to change Wendy's memories over something this small?' Mest thought to himself. Then, after shaking his head mentally, his expression turned resolute. 'Of course, it's not. I have to protect my reputation, after all.'

Seeing Mest's expression, Lisanna and Juvia exchanged glances before they both leapt away from Mest and Wendy and took their fighting stances.

'*Sigh* Good.' Mest thought to himself after seeing his opponents were ready to fight.

Then, Mest released Wendy's mouth and threw an apologetic smile at her, who was currently pouting for being interrupted, before he focused his attention back on Juvia and Lisanna.

"Sorry about that, Wendy." Mest said as he took his own fighting stance. "But for now, we need to focus on the exam."

Throwing another skeptical glance in Mest's direction, Wendy eventually nodded as she, too, took her fighting stance.

"Well, then, let's go." Juvia said as she swept her right arm in Mest and Wendy's direction. "[Water Slicer]."

Immediately, a crescent-shaped blade of water was shot forward from Juvia's hand, causing Mest and Wendy to dodge in opposite directions.

"[Take Over: Animal Soul: Cat]." Lisanna chanted as she was covered in the light of her [Take Over Magic].

A moment later, she reappeared with feline features, claws, a tail, and wearing a leopard print bikini. Then, in a burst of speed, she disappeared from Juvia's side, reappearing next to Wendy with her right hand raised and ready to slash with her claws.

"Wendy, look out!" Mest shouted as he [Teleported] away from where he stood

Before Lisanna's attack could land, Mest appeared between Lisanna and Wendy, and deflected Lisanna's attack to the side. Meanwhile, Wendy, who had been prepared to block Lisanna's strike, lowered her hands, forming a trumpet shape in front of her mouth as she took a deep breath.

"Sky Dragon's Roar]." Wendy chanted before blowing through her hands.

In the next instant, a cyclone spewed forth from Wendy's mouth in Juvia's direction.

Despite being targeted by a cyclone, Juvia made no attempt to dodge the incoming attack. Instead, she stood in front of it proudly. Meanwhile, Wendy, after seeing Juvia's actions, had a bad feeling. But since her attack had already been cast, there was nothing she could do about it.

A moment later, Wendy's breath attack slammed into Juvia, whose body simply turned into water and combined with the wind currents. Then, before the cyclone smashed into the wall behind her, Juvia seemingly took control and began moving around the room as a water vortex with her head at the front.

"[Water Jigsaw]." Juvia chanted as she zoomed around the room at higher speeds than she usually could achieve.

"Uh-oh." Wendy exclaimed in worry as Juvia used her attack to make her own spell even more dangerous. "Mest, I think we have a problem."

Hearing Wendy's uncertain tone, Mest dodged a kick from Lisanna before glancing in Juvia's direction. Noticing the speed at which Juvia was speeding around the area, he could not help but frown slightly.

"You really shouldn't look away." Lisanna said calmly as she brought down an axe kick at Mest's head.

Stepping back quickly to dodge, Mest threw a side kick of his own in response. Then, after Lisanna ducked under it, h[Teleported] away, before Lisanna was also forced to move from the spot.

"[Sky Dragon's Wing Attack]." Wendy chanted as she flapped her arms in Lisanna's direction.

As she flapped her arms, Wendy was surprised when instead of dodging away, Lisanna jumped straight up.

"[Take Over: Animal Soul: Bird]." Lisanna chanted before she transformed into a large bird with green and pink feathers.

Then, before she started to fall back towards the ground, Lisanna flapped her wings and sped towards Wendy before transforming back into her [Animal Soul: Cat] form and dropping an axe kick down on the younger girl.

"Not so fast." Mest said, [Teleporting] between Lisanna and Wendy once again.

Raising his arms in a cross over his head, Mest successfully guarded Wendy against Lisanna's kick. Unfortunately, while teleporting around, Mest had lost sight of Juvia, which would turn out to be a fatal mistake.

"That's Juvia's line.' Juvia said, drawing Mest's attention downward.

As soon as he lowered his head, Mest saw Juvia speeding towards him as a water vortex.

'Damn it." Mest thought as he tried to reach back and grab a hold of Wendy. Unfortunately, just as he made contact with his partner's shoulder, Juvia arrived and slammed into him. As a result, Mest was thrown backwards into Wendy before they were both blasted away into the wall behind them.

*Boom!*

Though they did not hit the wall hard enough to cause it to crater, Wendy was knocked unconscious from being squashed between Mest and the Wall. Meanwhile, Mest was disoriented and short of breath after taking Juvia's [Water Jigsaw] without putting up any form of defense.

"*Cough* *Cough* Damn it." Mest muttered as he looked back to see his unconscious team mate.

"It's over." Lisanna said as she approached Mest from the side before barraging him with slashes from her claws.

Unfortunately, Mest was too disoriented from Juvia's last attack to put his [Teleportation] to use. As a result, he was covered in scratches from Lisanna's attack before he fell, losing consciousness before hitting the floor.

'I knew Juvia was S-Class back when she was with Phantom Lord.' Mest thought as his vision started to darken. 'But was she always this strong? She basically incapacitated me with only one attack.'

Although unintentional, Alfonzo and Ur were responsible for Juvia's current strength. Because she sees Ur, Gray, and Ultear as her soul mates, she trains much harder than her canon counterpart did after joining Fairy Tail. And her reason was quite simple. She wanted to be strong enough to beat Alfonzo and prove that she was better for Ultear than such a womanizer. Also, she thought Ur would accept her feelings if she were stronger, as well.

"I would really hate to fight him one-on-one." Lisanna said. "No matter how fast my [Cat Take Over] makes me, I'm not faster than [Teleportation]."

"Yes, that magic does make things more difficult." Juvia replied, reverting back to her human form. "If he did not have to protect Wendy, then this would have been much harder."

"Anyway." Lisanna said with a cheerful, energetic smile on her face. "Let's go! I wonder how many other people have completed the first part already."

"Indeed." Juvia said, donning a sloppy smile. "Juvia misses her darling Gray, her lovely Ultear, and her wonderful Ur."

"Uh… Yeah, sure." Lisanna said with a wry smile.

With that, Lisanna and Juvia made their way towards the newly opened entrance, bringing an end to this part of the exam.

Chapitre 294: Cana and Lucy Vs. Gildarts

Earth Land, Ishgar, Kingdom of Fiore, Open Seas.

December 15, x784.

"Natsu, are you sure this is a good idea?" Happy asked. "What if you get in trouble again? You might not be able to take the exam again next year, too."

Currently, Happy, while carrying Natsu, Carla, and Panther Lily were flying over the seas towards Tenrou Island. While Happy was simply accompanying Natsu, Panther Lily was doing the same with Carla, who was worried about Wendy.

Hearing Happy's warning, Natsu shivered involuntarily. A moment later, however, he wore a resolute expression.

"Yeah." Natsu replied. "Even if I can't take the exam next year, I have a really bad feeling. Something's definitely gonna happen on Tenrou Island. And I wanna be there to help."

"What makes you so sure about that?" Panther Lily asked, having not spent enough time around Dragon Slayers to understand how sharp their instincts were.

"Besides, even if you're there, how much help would you really be?" Carla asked. "I mean, Master, Gildarts, Ur, Alfonzo, Elicia, and Laxus, the strongest members of the guild are there. If the six of them can't handle it, what good will you being there do?"

To that, Natsu did not have a response. Still, he refused to turn back.

"Wel, we can worry about that later." Panther Lily said, pointing forward. "That should e Tenrou Island, right?"

Following the direction Panther Lily pointed, the group could see a rather small island with no other islands visible in its vicinity. The island was quite rocky with one side of the island being considerably rockier than the rest. Even so, there was lush vegetation covering the majority of the island.

There were also two incredibly noticeable rock formations on the island that could be seen from the distance. The first was a large formation that jutted out over the sea. And the second was a large formation near the center of the island with a pair of waterfalls falling from it into a lake.

Then, there was the most distinctive landmark of the island, known as the Great Tenrou Tree. This gargantuan tree had a gnarled, somewhat curved trunk that extended high up into the sky. Near its peak, its large branches held up a large mass of earth with many normal-sized trees growing from it.

"Incredible." Carla muttered after seeing the island.

"Yeah, it looks like an island holding another island." Panther Lily said with a nod of agreement.

"Well, what else did you expect?" Natsu asked, puffing his chest out with pride. "That's the holy ground of our guild."

"Yeah, in fact, it's so special that if anyone with the Fairy Tail gild mark steps onto the island, they get stronger." Happy added.

Hearing that, the amazement in Carla and Panther Lily's eyes increased as they gazed upon Tenrou Island.

"Anyway, we need to hurry." Natsu said, pointing towards a certain part of the island. "Alfonzo's ship is already docked. That means the exam has already started.

Just as Natsu said, the three Exceed noticed Sixth Sense docked at the island's pier. Then, the three picked up the pace, hoping to arrive before anything happened.

From another direction another group was also approaching the island. Though, this group was not approaching from the air like Natsu and the Exceed. Instead, they approached by the sea. This group consisted of a fleet of ships flying the Magic Council's flag.

"Lahar, sir." The captain of the fleet's flag ship said, approaching Lahar, who had been watching the sea from the ship's bow. "We're approaching the coordinates the Council provided. But we still don't see the island in question."

"That's natural." Lahar replied while adjusting his glasses. "I remember hearing Chairman Gran Doma mention this island before. Apparently, there is a barrier that obscures Tenrou Island from all those who don't bare the Fairy Tail guild mark. But we need not worry. As long as we are nearby, Doranbolt should notice us. And with his [Teleportation Magic], he'll be able to get to us with no issue."

"Understood." The captain replied with a salute. "Either way, we will reach the place where we should drop anchor in about half an hour."

"I understand." Lahar said with a nod. "You may return to your duties."

"Yes sir!" The captain said energetically with another salute before turning away and returning to his station.

Alone once again, Lahar gazed out at the empty sea in front of him. And he could not help but fall into contemplation.

'Something about this mission seems wrong.' Lahar thought to himself. 'Usually, only the Chairman has the authority to authorize a mission of this scale. And although the orders had his seal on them, this is the first time he's ever handed me orders like these through a messenger. On top of that, as a man of justice, I can hardly believe that the Chairman would send Doranbolt to infiltrate Fairy Tail. Especially since it's against the laws set by the Magic Council for the Council to directly interfere with the internal workings of a guild. And sending one of ours to take part in their S-Class Promotion Exam is doing exactly that.'

As the fleet approached the anchor point, Lahar could not help but frown at all the inconsistencies. Still, with his personality, he would complete his mission and ask questions later.

Earth Land, Ishgar, Kingdom of Fiore, Tenrou Island.

Meanwhile, back on the island, Cana and Lucy were making it to the end of the cave they chose. And as soon as they stepped into the battle area, both girls could not help but groan audibly.

"Of course, it would be him." Cana muttered while face palming.

"Do we even have a chance of winning, Cana?" Lucy asked.

"Of course, we do." Cana said, lowering her hand as she spoke. "And even if we don't, we're wizards of Fairy Tail, we never give up."

*Smack!* x 2

After hearing Cana's words, Lucy slapped her cheeks with both hands. Then, she stared at the duo's opponent with determination in her eyes.

"Right, like I told you, I'll make sure that you pass and become an S-Class wizard, Cana." Lucy said.

With that, Cana and Lucy started walking forward. The sound of their footsteps eventually alerted the wizard who was waiting to test them. Raising his head, the man, Gildarts, who had been sitting in the middle of the room and drinking from a bottle of liquor, smiled goofily upon catching sight of Cana.

"Cana!" Gildarts shouted as he jumped to his feet. "Daddy missed you! You should sit down with Daddy and have a drink. We don't need to worry about the exam, it's not like I could fail you, anyway. Instead, why don't you tell Daddy about what's been bothering you."

As Gildarts spoke, he quickly moved about the cave, using his [Crash Magic] to break down pieces of the wall and making them into seats for Cana and Lucy. Meanwhile, Cana and Lucy could only look at him dumbfoundedly as the tension they had built up for the battle crumbled.

"*Sigh* I guess I should have seen this coming." Cana said while shaking her head.

As she spoke, Cana reached into her card pouch and pulled out several cards. Then, after forming a few combinations and making sure they were correct, Cana nodded in satisfaction. Then she slapped the card combinations onto her exposed skin.

"[Card Magic: Enhancement Cards: Speed, Power, Magic Power Density]." Cana chanted, activating the card combinations.

These card combinations were spells that she had been working with Alfonzo and Elicia to complete for the last few years. And although it did not take her that long to get the basics of the spells right, getting them to a point she could use them in combat was the difficult part.

Like the spell names suggested, these card combinations increase Cana's speed, physical strength, and the density of her magic power. And while getting them to work properly has never been an issue, controlling the output so she could use them without exhausting herself immediately was the hard part.

Once all her spells took effect, Cana dashed forward, leaving a streak behind her. Then, while Gildarts was busy moving a boulder to where the others were, he was struck in the sternum with a strong kick that sent him flying into the wall.

"Gah!" Gildarts grunted in pain.

Before he could recover, however, Gildarts saw his daughter appear in front of him with her fists raised and ready to throw a series of punches.

"Ora! Ora! Ora! Ora! Ora! Ora! Ora! Ora! Ora! Ora~~~~~~~~~!" Cana shouted repeatedly as she rained blows on Gildarts for nearly a minute, until her enhancements timed out.

Meanwhile, Lucy, who had been confused ever since Gildarts welcomed them into the room like they had come to attend a party rather than being in the middle of the S-Class Promotion Exam, could only look on in shock as Cana pummeled her father with no remorse. Still, once Cana's attack was finished, she started making her way over to her partner.

Cana, on the other hand, wore quite the refreshed expression after unloading on her father like she did.

"Ah~~! That felt great!" Cana said in a relaxed tone as she wiped a bead of sweat from her brow. "I've wanted to do that for years. Finally releasing all the stress from all the times he's embarrassed me with his doting dad act feels amazing."

"Um… Is that okay?" Lucy asked after arriving next to Cana. Judging by the expression on her face, it was clear that she was amazed at just how easily Gildarts had been defeated. Then, she looked at Cana with shock written all over her face. "Are you actually the strongest member of the guild and just didn't tell anyone?"

"Hahaha! Yeah, right." Cana said, throwing her head back in laughter at Lucy's question. Then, she pointed at her father and continued with a smile. "I still can't even beat Fonzie and Lici. The only reason I could do this is because Dad dropped his guard completely."

"Oh, I guess that makes sense." Lucy said, nodding her head in understanding. "Still, you could have warned me, Cana. I'm supposed to be your partner. But I haven't been able to help you, at all. I even got my spirits to teach me the spell Alfonzo and Lici talked about. But you haven't given me a chance to use them."

"Oh, they actually taught you?" Cana asked in surprise. "But I thought you said they refused."

"They did, at first." Lucy replied with a nod. "They said it was because I didn't have enough magic power. But after Alfonzo taught everyone how to compress their magic power, they changed their mind when they noticed how dense my magic power was."

"Damn." Cana muttered. "Now I kinda regret fighting Dad the way I did. I really wanna see that spell."

"Yeah, I really wanted to use it, too." Lucy said in a downcast tone.

"Oh well, it's not like the exam is over, right?" Cana said, throwing an arm over Lucy's shoulders. "I'm sure we'll have more chances for you to use it, right?"

Hearing that, Lucy perked up again.

"That's right." Lucy said, raising her fists in front of her chest. "I'll get the chance to help you in the next part of the exam."

"Wow, you really bounce back quick." Cana said with a smile. "Now I can see why Fonzie likes you so much."

With that, Cana started pulling Lucy towards the entrance that opened after Gildarts was defeated. At the same time, all the excitement Lucy was showing at the opportunity to test her new spells in real combat was replaced with embarrassment and a blushing face.

"I guess these really don't hurt, either." Cana said as she smirked roguishly.

In the next instant, the arm on Lucy's shoulders dropped down as she grabbed a handful of Lucy's butt. At the same time, Cana's free hand reached out and squeezed one of Lucy's rather ample breasts.

"Cana~~~~~!" Lucy shrieked as she tried to break away from Cana's grip. "What are you doing?"

"Nothing really, just checking out the goods for Fonzie." Cana said playfully while squeezing Lucy's assets. "And I must say, he's really gonna like them. Hahahahaha!"

"Cana!" Lucy shouted again. And this time she was able to break away from Cana successfully.

Then, with one laughing happily while running away, and the other chasing with a bright red face, Cana and Lucy made their way out of the battle area and onto the next part of the exam.

A few moments later, Gildarts slowly opened his eyes. Then, he raised his hand and started rubbing his jaw.

"Damn, that hurt a hell of a lot more than I that it would." Gildarts muttered with a slightly pained expression. "Although that was definitely enough to qualify her as an S-Class wizard, there's no way that was enough to defeat me. And I'm pretty sure Cana knew that, too. That's why she started teasing Lucy almost immediately after her sneak attack ended."

With that said, Gildarts stood up and dusted himself off.

"Or maybe, she's just a pervert." Gildarts thought aloud with a helpless expression. "Well, she is my daughter, after all. And the apple never falls far from the tree."

At the same time, in a lush forest near the center of the island, a black-haired young man wearing a high-collared, black robe with gold trim, black pants, a pendant around his neck, and a white toga slowly opened his eyes.

"*Yawn* I haven't slept that well in ages." The young man said as he stretched. Then, he looked around and noticed a number of small, herbivorous animals had gathered around him while he was sleeping. A moment later, however, his expression became much more tense. "Why are there so many people on the island? Oh, wait… What day is it? Uh… That's right, it's time for the S-Class exam, isn't it?"

With that thought, the young man looked towards all the people he could sense.

"I wonder if Natsu is a candidate this year." The young man said with a fond smile on his face as he grasped the pendant hanging around his neck. A moment later, his fond smile turned into an expression mixed with both panic and pain. "No, not now…"

Sensing something was wrong, the animals stood p and bolted away from the young man. Before they could get too far, however, the young man released a burst of dark and sinister magic power that caused everything, whether they be plants or animals, to die once it washed over them.

"Not again." The young man grumbled with a genuinely remorseful expression on his face as he looked around at the lives he had taken unintentionally.

A moment later, he walked away from the scene of devastation, intending to find somewhere else to sleep until it was time for him to return to where he came from.
