Ash hurried me to my quarters.
I barely saw the other women as we rushed past, his arm around my back, his head on a constant swivel as if he expected an attack from any angle before we made it back. I should have been nervous about that, but I was hunched forward, hands pressed to my churning stomach, mind spinning.

It couldn't be.
It wasn't a farce, right? David hadn't made all those claims just to soothe my conscience?
He really had provided for them to be safe… hadn't he?
When we finally got to my rooms, Ash hesitated for a moment, suddenly torn—desperate to check the rooms and make sure we had no unwelcome visitors, but not wanting to leave me unattended, even inside the door.
With a muttered curse, he locked the door behind me hurriedly, then took my arms, urging me not to move as he swept through the rooms, checking for intruders.
