Chapitre 41: On the Path

*Clink Clink* *Creak*

"Ughh..."

Zane opened his tired eyes to the door of his cell opening slowly. "Hmm?" He jerked up from the bed into a state of alertness, then relaxed.

Looking towards the open door, he saw a silhouette of a person he had become quite familiar with.

"Is it already time?" Zane asked, confused. He looked around the cell and saw Slem, on the floor next to the bed, leaning back on it and sleeping soundly.

Judging by the rest his body got and Slem's state, he concluded it was too early for Zaros to come for him. "Isn't it way too early for me to work?"

Zaros's gaze lingered at him for a moment before he spoke, "Come with me." He moved to the side and gestured Zane to come out of the cell.

Zane looked at him with wariness, but he slowly walked out of the door. Once he was out, Zaros closed the cell and walked ahead.

"Follow me." Zaros walked forward, towards the entrance of the prison basement. Zane walked behind him, confused. "What's happening?"

Zaros paused for a moment. A small smile escaped his lips. "It's starting."

Zane opened his mouth to speak but Zaros didn't give him the chance. "Let's go now. We need to prepare." With that, he started moving again, leaving Zane no choice but to follow him.

After coming out of the cell block, they walked through the town, towards the church. Zane looked around the town, which was different from normal. This time, it was bustling with activity of the cultists.

'Are they finally going to war..?' Zane thought to himself and looked at Zaros's back. Watching him walk through the noisy town casually, Zane kept his thoughts to himself and walked behind him silently.

*Bam* Zaros opened the doors to the church and headed inside with Zane. The pews of the church were empty and there was only one person inside the hall, the old priest. He was standing in front of the altar which hid the secret door.

"His grace is waiting for you." He spoke to Zaros without any friendliness in his voice.

"I know. Open the door." Zaros spat back.

"Hmph!" The old priest scoffed and opened the altar, revealing the door to the Saint's room.

Zaros hurriedly walked inside the room without giving the old man a second look. Zane glanced at the old man who was also staring back at him with fuming eyes. Zane let out a wry smile and followed behind Zaros quickly into the Saint's room.

After reaching the tall seat with the Saint sitting on it, Zaros kneeled down. "Your grace."

With a voice that echoed through out the room, the Saint asked Zaros, "Is it ready?"

Zaros lifted his head up and turned towards Zane, waiting for him to speak. After hesitating for a moment, Zane finally spoke up, "T-The beast is ready to be used."

Upon hearing Zane, the silhouette of the Saint perked up, and it seemed like he was smiling. "Good. How much essence did you feed it?" This time, the Saint spoke directly with Zane. Each word spoken by the Saint made Zane's body sweat.

"It has been overloaded to almost double of the beast's original essence." Zane replied hastily, sweat dripping from his forehead.

"Hmm.." The Saint moved his hand on his chin. "Haah.. That'll have to do for now" He spoke with a bit of disappointment on his voice. "Zaros." He called out.

"Your Grace." Zaros bowed his head and listened.

"Take him and prepare the beast. We'll be using it soon." The Saint dismissed them with a wave of his hand.

"Yes Your Grace" Zaros stood up and walked back to the entrance with Zane. After exiting the room, Zaros kept on walking, towards the room where the Beast was fed essence.

"Tch. Bastard." The old priest looked towards Zaros with disgust and pulled the lever, closing the door.

While Zane was lost in his own thoughts walking through the corridors of the church, they finally reached the room. Zaros opened the door to the room and went inside, he jumped directly on the couch. "Come on." He called Zane.

Closing the door behind him, Zane slowly approached the chair in the middle and sat on it, picking up the box on the table. "What am I supposed to do now?"

"For now? Nothing" Zaros replied nonchalantly. "Just rest on the chair and recover your essence for now. When the time comes, you need to make the beast activate it's shield."

Zane looked at him with tired eyes, "...How?"

"I'll tell you when the time comes." Zaros waved his hand and laid back on the couch.

"Haah..." Zane sighed and looked at the wooden box on the table. He opened the box to find the pitch black slug inside. The slug that was once like a dried up date was now plump and wriggling enthusiastically. 'Getting excited huh?' Zane smiled. 'Me too.' He put the slug back in it's box and closed his eyes.

---

Rays of the bright afternoon sun was illuminating a path after passing through tree leaves. The path was full of horse carts and carriages. The horse carts were filled with knights, and the four carriages in front was for the Night Leaders and Commanders.

Inside a carriage, Thorn was sitting comfortably, a small watch on his hand. He was glaring at the watch with solemn eyes.

"Ahem." A cough disturbed Thorn from his reverie. He looked up to the one who coughed and found it was Anson at the other end. Thorn looked at him and raised his eyebrow up.

"You've been looking at that watch for almost the whole trip. Aren't you worried?" Anson asked with a concerned look on his face.

"Worried? About what?" Thorn relaxed on the seat of the carriage.

"Well, what if they have a Saint? What would we do then?" Anson jerked his body from his seat.

"Relax. A Saint isn't so easy to come by. The Cult of Mayhem is only a century old. How could they have a Saint?" Thorn answered him while he nodded his head.

"Well, if they do have a Saint." Thorn looked at Anson's eyes and added, "That would be the end for everyone here."
