Chapitre 24: Chapter 24: 1st Official Battle

'We can now be considered friends, right?' Aeron thought as he ate his sandwich.

Aeron never made any friends his whole life. He knew a lot of people, but none of them were considered his friends. Was it because they went through the Viridian Forest incident together? He had bonded with Nessa rather quickly.

He looked at Axew, who was eating his Pokémon food along with Horsea. The poor Water-type Pokémon was still not used to seeing Axew eat ten Pokémon worth of food. Luckily or unluckily, the amount had just increased in recent days. 'He is a Snorlax in disguise.'

"Let's go to Pokemart after this. I want to see if I can buy a useful TM for Horsea." Nessa suggested, and Aeron agreed.

"You stole my words. I was about to ask the same."

The duo started talking, and even after eating, they had to wait since Axew was not.

"How can one Pokémon eat so much?" Nessa could not wrap her head around it. "Is it because he is a Dragon-type? I heard they are high maintenance, but this?"

"That is the only thing the wuss is good at."

Suddenly, Aeron heard a familiar voice from behind. He turned around and looked at the red-haired boy walking toward them, followed by an Eevee.

"I heard you got yourself kidnapped?" Max smirked and then pointed at his Pokémon. "I bet your Pokémon was too scared even to fight back. A total wuss."

Aeron could hear chuckles from the other trainers in the cafeteria. Nessa looked at Aeron and did not say anything. She wanted to interfere, but the boy had already asked her to turn a blind eye if something similar happened.

Feeling a tug on his pants, Aeron looked down at Axew, who was done eating his food.

"How about it? Do you want an official battle?" Max asked while sending a battle invitation to Aeron with his Pokedex. He had been jealous of the black-haired boy since he could not be one of the rankers, and it gave him a sense of satisfaction knowing he could poke at a ranker while the latter could do nothing.

Max knew the ranker would walk away, and just as he had guessed, he saw the black-haired boy pick up his Pokémon before walking away.

"See? What did I say? He will run away again." Max laughed once again, along with his travelling group. He walked back toward his seat, eating his food.

"Are you not coming?"

Max had not even taken a bite when he heard a familiar yet unfamiliar voice enter his ears. He turned around and looked at Aeron, who had a confused look on his face. His Pokedex vibrated, and he looked at the notification on it.

[The request sent to trainer Aeron Duskborn has been accepted. The Pokémon battle between Max Thalod and Aeron Duskborn is now official].

"Come to the Pokémon Centre's battlefield." Aeron walked away as he said those words, not bothering to look at the surprised faces of all the trainers in the cafeteria.

Aeron looked at the battlefield.

This was the first time he was standing on one. His fights with Nessa over the week were all mock battles meant for training. He was about to have his first Pokémon battle—an official one.

"I hope you do not have cold feet, Ranker."

Max, followed by his group, walked to the other side of the field. He still could not believe the boy running away from Pokémon battles had accepted his challenge.

As it was an official battle, several trainers had gathered to spectate, many explaining to others the 'rivalry' between Max and Aeron.

"I will be the referee." Nessa stepped forward before anyone else could. Neither of the challengers disagreed as she walked to her spot. "This will be an official battle between Aeron Duskborn and Max Thalod. Each trainer can only use two Pokémon. Anyone who breaks the rule will be disqualified immediately." As soon as Nessa said those words, she tapped her Pokedex, and the rules were updated on Aeron and Max's Pokedex. "The winner will be decided when one side's Pokémon are either unable to battle or falls unconscious," Nessa explained before continuing. "Are both trainers ready?"

"Yes."

"Can't wait to beat his ass."

Max smirked before taking out his first Pokeball, and Aeron immediately called back Axew. Why? Because he was not going to miss the chance to throw a Pokeball into the battleground while calling out for his Pokémon.

Nessa raised her right arm and then dropped it in one quick motion.

"Begin."

As soon as Nessa marked the beginning of the match, Aeron and Max threw their Pokeball toward the battleground. The Pokeballs opened in mid-air, and two Pokemon appeared on the field.

"Veee."

"AXEW!"

While Max's Eevee gave a soft cry, Axew showed his dominance with a roar. However, it brought a different reaction within the crowd than he had expected.

"Cute."

"How can a Dragon be so cute?"

"I am jealous."

The audience did not hide their thoughts, making the Dragon-type rage. He wanted to be scary like Kadabra, and these people called him cute.

Aeron ignored the crowd and scanned his Pokemon.

"Eevee, follow my lead," said Max before he called out a move. "Use [Quick Attack]."

The little brown fox was soon surrounded by white light as its speed increased dramatically. The Eevee had closed in on Axew, who was waiting for Aeron's command.

Aeron knew [Quick Attack] would do decent damage to Axew. It was not super-effective, but it was pretty troublesome from a strong pokemon. 'The Eevee is strong. But...'

The red-haired boy had been getting on his nerves for almost a month. His sentiments were shared by Axew as well, and both of them had come to a mutual decision. Though it was a bit foolish, they would nip the boy of his arrogance in this battle and have their revenge.

"Axew, use [Dragon Claw] and grab it."

The Dragon did not show any fear as he eagerly waited for the Eevee as his claws were surrounded by Draconic energy that took the shape of claws. When the Eevee approached him with a high-speed [Quick Attack], he raised his claws before him.

Max, eagerly waiting for Axew to fly back, was surprised to see Axew grabbing his Pokémon's glowing tail with his claws.

"H-How…?"

Aeron did not care to explain and gave Axew another command. "Toss it into the air and then use [Dragon Claw] again."

Although Axew could stop the Eevee in its tracks, he had also suffered. But it was not enough to hinder him in any way.

Axew had never fought anyone before just a week ago, but that did not mean he had never trained. From the first day they started their journey, Aeron and Axew had trained regularly. They might be inexperienced in battle but not weak.

Following his trainer's instructions, Axew threw the confused Eevee into the air. While the Eevee panicked mid-air and its trainer was still too fazed at the turn of events, Axew once again gathered energy in his claws.

He looked at Max and then at the Eevee who had been bullying him and his trainer for the whole month. If he had beaten the little fox before, Aeron would have never run to Viridian Forest and would have never gotten hurt. His fear of fight had disappeared the day he saw Aeron's blood. It was something he never wanted to see again. He blamed himself for it but also the redhead and his Pokémon to some extent as well.

As the Eevee dropped toward the ground, Max finally came out of his daze. "Eevee, use [Iron Tail]."

The Eevee dropping to the ground, tried to use [Iron Tail], but then its eyes met the red eyes of Axew, who was waiting for it with his claws covered in Draconic energy. It could not help but gulp in fear and was too slow to follow its trainer's command.

The last thing the Eevee saw was the glowing red eyes of Axew and a green-coloured Draconic claw coming toward its face.

Bang

Axew smashed his claws into Eevee's face and sent it flying toward Max. The little fox rolled on the ground as it stopped in front of Max's feet, unconscious.

"Woah."

The crowd gasped as they saw the outcome of the battle.

"Eevee is unable to battle. Max Thalod, call out your next Pokémon." Nessa's voice entered Max's ears, but he was too stunned to do anything. All of his expectations and imaginations crumbled as he had a difficult time registering his loss. But the battle had to go on, and thus Nessa warned, "You have thirty seconds to call your next Pokemon."

"I was caught off guard, but I will bury you with this." He threw the Pokeball toward the field, and with a red flash of light, a Pokémon appeared before everyone.

"Bellsprout." The Pokémon marked its arrival with a calm voice.

"This is going to be our first official battle together." Max talked to the Bellsprout he had recently caught and trained. "Make sure you do your best."

"Bel Bel."

On the other side, the Dragon-type Pokémon raised his tiny hand and asked the Grass-type to come at him.

"Axew!"

The change in Axew's personality had been drastic. Unlike how he used to be scared, now he looked for fights that would make him strong. He was still as innocent as ever, but he now had a hunger for strength, and since the last [Outrage], the dragon within him had surfaced.

"Round two, Begin."

Max gritted his teeth at Axew's challenge and instructed his Pokémon. "Use [Magic Leaf]."

It was the strongest attack in Bellsprout's moveset, but unfortunately for him, Grass-type moves were only half as effective on Dragon-type Pokémon.

As laser-sharp leaves approached Axew, he did not wait for Aeron's instruction and moved forward, closing the distance to his opponent. Just when the [Magic Leaf] was about to hit him, Axew jumped over them, surprising the audience.

However, [Magic Leaf] was a unique move. It would chase the target no matter how many times one dodged.

"[Acid Spray]." Max called out another attack, and Bellsprout shot a purple-coloured poisonous acid at Axew. He wanted to corner Axew with [Acid Spray] from the front and [Magic Leaf] from behind.

"[Dragon Claw]."

It was all that Aeron called out as Axew once again gathered draconic energy around his claws, and he did so while dodging the [Acid Spray], moving closer to his opponent. All his training with Horsea over the floating platforms was coming to use as Axew always kept the balance, even dodging attacks at weird angels.

"Use [Acid Spray] again and aim properly, dammit." Max cursed when he saw Axew approaching closer to his Pokémon. The Flower Pokémon listened to his trainer but panicked when he saw the glowing red eyes of the Dragon. That moment of hesitation was all Axew needed to close in on it.

Axew swung his claw at the opponent without showing even a thread of mercy, sending it flying like Eevee. However, this was not the end.

"[Night Slash]." Aeron's calm voice reverberated on the battlefield, and Axew lowered his body to charge at Bellsprout.

"Hurry up and use [Vine Whip]."

The Grass-type shot out two whips at Axew, but instead of dodging, Aeron had different plans.

"Grab them and pull Bellsprout toward you."

Axew did not hesitate to hold the two whips in his hands before pulling on them, making the Flower Pokémon fly back toward Axew, whose tusks were glowing in dark purple light.

"Bellsprout!"

The Pokémon cried, but Axew did not let go and struck it in the head with his two tusks.

"Send him away," Aeron instructed, and Axew held the now unconscious Bellsprout by the head before throwing it toward Max's feet, who stood in a daze at how the battle had turned out.

Without waiting even a second, Nessa raised her hands as she declared the end of this challenge.

"Bellsprout is unable to battle; Axew is the winner. The victory goes to Aeron Duskborn from Florian Town."

The crowd cheered as they clapped for the winner of the battle.

Max stood in a daze as he looked at the Pokémon at his feet. "H-How is this possible?"

"Axew."

The Dragon shrugged his shoulders, causing the crowd to burst into laughter.

"I knew a ranker would not be weak."

"He must be ignoring Max since the outcome was already clear."

The crowd saw Aeron in a different light, but he could care less about them. Although Axew was not injured seriously, he was still slightly hurt from the [Quick Attack]. Aeron took out a potion and sprayed it on the injuries before taking out a few berries and giving them to his Pokémon.

"Aaaxew."

Axew gave a cute smile as he broke the berries with his tusks and started munching on them, forgetting he had just eaten enough food for more than ten Pokémon.

Max broke out of his daze and recalled his Pokémon. He said nothing else and walked away with his head hung low, too ashamed of his loss. After taking a few more steps, he got a notification, and the words on his Pokedex gripped his heart. Aeron's voice was a nail in the coffin.

"Thanks for the 500 P$."

He had to pay for his loss since this was an official battle.
