Chapitre 197: Chapter 197: The Barov Family

Honesty, bravery, wisdom, and loyalty - Duke had almost become synonymous with sainthood in the hearts of many.

In truth, aside from a bit of cleverness as a traveler from another world, Duke was far from possessing the other three qualities.

Duke had never considered himself loyal to King Llane.

As a modern person, he was more accustomed to the mentality of bosses and workers, never feeling that peculiar sense of devotion to offer his life for someone else.

Being a traveler familiar with the course of history, Duke knew the importance of wealth. However, too much wealth could be just as useless.

The most crucial aspect was power - both his own and that of his subordinates.

According to history, the First Orc War ended with the opening of the Dark Portal and the siege of Stormwind City.

The Second Orc War began when the orcish army regrouped and headed north, causing trouble for all races and kingdoms on the continent.

Duke was unsure whether the orcs would continue their self-destructive path as they had in history, opposing all races and major powers on the continent. But it became apparent when the system's evaluation showed Azeroth's similarity dropping from 80% to 79% that history would continue to bear striking resemblances.

Duke managed to save 50,000 elite soldiers and King Llane, who hadn't died in history. Despite losing the unfortunate Khadgar and killing over a hundred thousand orcish elites, and even tricking Orgrim quite severely, all these shifts in fate only reduced the similarity by 1%. It was quite a sobering thought.

However, considering the upcoming appearances of the mighty Burning Legion and the world-shaping Titans, Duke felt that his efforts to change the world by even just 1% were quite remarkable.

Alright, back to the current situation.

The following noon, the first batch of rescue ships arrived. These ships had ample room, and after replenishing some supplies and medicines for those waiting on the island, they carried away 16,000 people.

On board, Duke was already quite busy.

Due to the Horde's negligence towards the Western Plaguelands, Duke managed to secretly transport the summer grain that was meant for Stormwind City to Southshore. This stash of grain could greatly alleviate Southshore's food shortage.

Next was the relocation of the murlocs and naga. While the orcs couldn't handle the coastal murlocs, Duke had a better use for them - in Southshore.

The Eastern Kingdoms were actually divided into two large continents connected by the colossal Thandol Span.

To the south was the Kingdom of Stormwind and its territories, while the north was dominated by the dwarves with Ironforge at its center.

To the southeast of the northern continent was the Arathi Highlands, home to the Kingdom of Stromgarde with Stromgarde Keep as its capital.

Directly south were the Hillsbrad Foothills, the territory of the weakest human kingdom among the seven, Alterac. The evacuated citizens of Stormwind were headed to Southshore, which was located on the southern coast of the Hillsbrad Foothills.

Further west on the northern continent was the magical kingdom of Dalaran, and to the north was the powerful Kingdom of Lordaeron.

Of course, at the northernmost part of the entire northern continent was the kingdom of the high elves, Quel'Thalas.

Now, Duke was relocating the murlocs because he needed them to help reclaim their kin in Southshore, as well as fish as much as possible to provide food for the refugees of Stormwind.

Of course, the northernmost part of the entire Northern Continent is the Kingdom of Quel'Thalas, home to the High Elves.

Now, Duke is migrating the Murlocs because he needs them to help reclaim the Murlocs there and fish as much as possible to provide catches for the refugees of Stormwind.

About 50,000 refugees from Stormwind were taken in by the maritime kingdom of Kul Tiras, while another 100,000 made their way towards Stromgarde, Alterac, Dalaran, and even Lordaeron. With the upcoming arrival of 50,000 elite soldiers, there were still just under 450,000 remaining in Southshore.

Even so, it's an immense burden.

Through the calculations of the system sprite, Duke had determined that even if they found enough land to cultivate right away, they would still need at least 20,000 tons of grain to last until the first harvest next year.

In this era, that number was astronomical.

It was far beyond what could be purchased through commercial means.

Layne, the escapist, had dumped the food problem onto Duke.

This left Duke incredibly frustrated.

He had a mountain of tasks to complete, such as finding time to head to the southernmost part of the Eastern Kingdoms, Stranglethorn Vale, to deal with the remaining Bloodsail Buccaneers. And also finding time to practice magic.

After much consideration, Duke decided to visit the Barov family in Alterac first.

Some might wonder why Duke didn't visit the king of Alterac, but instead chose to visit the Barov family, when Southshore belonged to the Kingdom of Alterac.

This required an understanding of the troubled history of the Alterac Kingdom.

The history of Alterac was brief, spanning only about twenty years.

Aiden Perenolde, the founder of Alterac, was a rich heir who created the kingdom in order to have a domain of his own. He chose to establish the kingdom in the steep Alterac Mountains, where the barren land and harsh living conditions attracted very few followers. As a result, the kingdom's actual territory and power were minimal.

It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that Alterac was the weakest of the seven human kingdoms.

This situation improved with the addition of the Barov family.

The Barov family of Alterac was a wealthy family that controlled vast lands to the east of the Alterac Mountains. Brill, Tarren Mill, Caer Darrow, and Southshore were all part of their fiefdom.

Their wealth could rival the royal family of Alterac. They had the blood of the Arathi people, and the family members resided in Caer Darrow, an old castle of the Arathi civilization, continuing the ancient and noble lineage.

In fact, it was the Barov family that Duke had been dealing with all along.

From the beginning, Duke never considered relying on other forces to secure food. The transportation of grain in this era was abysmal.

Losses of up to fifty percent could occur in long-distance transportation. The only thing Duke felt fortunate about was that, due to the unstable grain harvests, most families in this era had the habit of storing grain. As long as he could secure the support of the wealthy Barov family, they wouldn't have to worry about food until next year.

A week later, Layne and Duke's party arrived in Southshore.

Layne was amazed by the expanded Southshore— a stone dock built to Stormwind standards; rows of neat wooden houses as far as the eye could see from the town's entrance; medical facilities, dining, firefighting, restrooms, and various living facilities readily available; and even an enormous wooden wall under construction.

Still, Layne hurried onto the road to Lordaeron after appeasing the people.

Duke, on the other hand, left Windsor to help train his private army and headed to Caer Darrow with Marco and others as a front to meet with Alexi Barov—the close friend of King Aiden and now the Lord Barov.

L’AVIS DES CRÉATEURS

Hello everyone,

If you're not aware I am currently testing out a new way of doing things with regards to chapter pushes. The test run this week is my other fiction transation for game of thrones. Basicilly I launched a new buy me coffee page where peopel can provide donations to support me directly as indicator of which book I should be focusing my energy on for a given week. If it goes well then I would extend my chapter push for that particular series for more time.

it's not been so great so far but we will see if that changes and next week I will be trying to do the same for this book as well.

What does that mean for all of you? more chapters. my premium supporters on patreon will still maintain a 60 chapter lead on you all but what I am hoping this change will do will enable to better guage what book has the most interest and really reward my supporters with more chapters independent of any monthly commitments.

If this change in style and additional push for chapters works out expect more of the same in the future. If not then I will return to the regular schedule of 60 chapters per month.
