"First we will start with some questions before we go into the tests." the doctor said with a kind smile.
"Yes sir." James answered with an excited smile looking forward to learning more about his quirk.
"Ok let's start with how you're feeling. The nurse told me you woke up in pain before sprouting... wings?" the doctor said looking at the chart he was holding.
"Hmm" James nodded in agreement his parents looking on in worry and excitement towards finding out more about his quirk.
"Are you still experiencing any pain or discomfort?" the doctor continued while taking notes on the chart.
"No sir. After the wings came out the pain went away." James answered.
"It says you were able to absorb or collapse your wings completely into your body, can you show them to me?" the doctor asked without too much curiosity so far. Though growing wings was a little unique unless more was involved such as improving the quirk holder's entire physique it was a fun, but relatively weak quirk. It could be used in transportation, communication, reconnaissance and some other niche fields though so unlike some quirks that held no function or worse detracted from your future options it was at least a boon regardless of how minor. As a foremost doctor at a first-rate institution he had seen far more powerful and unusual quirks.
James concentrated for a moment on the sensation of the wings he could still feel like extra limbs even when they were retracted which allowed him to sprout the wings again this time thankfully without the immense suffering. He couldn't imagine having to get used to that feeling every time he wanted to use his wings. The spread wide filling up a large amount of the room when he spread them out completely.
The doctor smiled as he paid close attention to James' wings unfurling, the black feathers so dark they seemed to be absorbing the very light around them. They were quite beautiful, more so than any other wings he had seen before. They matched the cute little boy quite well with his matching sleek dark purple hair and smooth pale skin for contrast. He touched various parts of the wings and moved them a little to test the mobility making sure everything worked and whether there was anything unusual.
"Can you flap them as if you were trying to fly?" he inquired further.
James thought for a moment, but despite never having used the wings before there seemed to be some sort of instinctual memory of how to use them the same way you never think about how to move any of the rest of your body. He flapped his wings quite powerfully though making sure he didn't actually take off.
The doctor nodded in satisfaction.
"Well, so far everything about your wings looks to be healthy and in order." he said while noting down his observations.
"Let's move to the real test. The device hanging from the ceiling is one of our state-of-the-art diagnostic scanners. It can scan your whole body including your quirk factor and using an extensive database of registered quirks it will try to categorise and match your quirk. This can tell us some information about it and also what to expect. The database has the data of millions of quirks making it the most accurate to date." he smiled as he introduced the pride of their hospital. Such equipment came at a high price, but clients like the Busujimas and their deep pockets made it more than worth it though.
The doctor guided James to the centre of the room before moving off to the side himself and entering some things on a screen. After doing so the arm lowered and unfolded and moved around James in varying circles allowing it to scan every inch of his body. It kept this up for quite a few minutes before the screen beeped and the arm retracted back towards the ceiling. After a few minutes of waiting it seemed the machine was finally done going over the information.
"Strange..." the doctor mumbled.
"What is it doctor?" James asked tilting his head cutely.
"There are no matches. Not even close ones. The readings are even very different from other flight related quirks which is unexpected. Let me take a closer look at the data of the scan itself to see if I can tell anything from there" the doctor replied now quite intrigued as he started messing with the machine.
James looked over at his parents with a confident smile to try to reassure them as they were understandably concerned. Although so far his quirk seemed harmless if it was a completely new quirk there were possibilities there might be unknown negative side effects which would be even worse than the negative side effects of known quirks due to them not being able to anticipate them and find ways to mitigate them. He still felt confident though. There was no way his godly luck would allow him to get a quirk that would harm him.
"Ok. So I can only interpret a little from the raw scan data. However it is peculiar. The wings seem to be healthy and part of his body now. However we are also seeing a very high amount of energy being produced and stored in all of his cells. I can't say for certain what this means. It might be a form of physical enhancement such as increased strength, speed, endurance, recovery or other physical aspects. Only time will tell exactly what this energy is being used for." he said trying his best to come up with an explanation for the scan data. Since the gene expression was very unlike any other quirk scan in the database he had no way of telling how the quirk was functioning with this energy. All he knew was that if he added the extra energy generated in his cells together he was generating more energy than most adult quirk holder, let alone a 4 year old.
His numbers were off the charts and nothing like a regular flight quirk would suggest.
