Chapitre 4: Gyomlos

The journey to the first stop on the road to Raalo took several days. Zonna used this time to talk to Sebastios and Ramza about magical topics. Despite the fact that she had already spoken to them many times in Balmaszeglod her hunger for knowledge in this area was unsatisfied. For her bodyguards, it was also time usefully spent, as every mage who spoke to the princess got something for themselves from it. Sometimes it was inspiration about a new spell or its application, or a new insight into the way they used magic.

During these conversations, Marzee listened with interest. After spending five years at Zonna's side, she had also developed an interest in magic herself. Additionally, Marzee almost had the potential to become a mage and lacked not much mana to be able to safely undergo a ritual. She had received a promise from the princess that when she became queen she would pay her mana training costs to become her court mage.

The carriage itself, in which they made the journey, was unique. It was one of the new magical items. It did not need animals to be harnessed and moved by magic alone. It was intended only for the use of mages, as only they had enough mana to power it. However, royal families and wealthy families could afford to buy them and hire a mage to power them. These vehicles began to become popular among the elite. The princess's carriage was alternately filled with mana by Sebastios and Ramza.

Finally, the walls of Gyomlos, the capital of Sangeria, appeared before their eyes. Sangeria was a state neighbouring Balmaszeglodia to the north and belonged to the Alliance of Ardea, under the aegis of Raalo. By virtue of its links with the richest state in Altea, Sangeria itself was wealthy and the military alliance made its inhabitants feel unthreatened by its powerful neighbour Bazionia.

Gyomlos was a large city with many inhabitants. It was mostly inhabited, like the whole country, by Nords and Aisen. Occasionally, single free Dragonits were spotted. Something that did not happen in Balmasheglodia. The speciality of this city was specially produced fabrics, made in a secret way. Their popularity across the continent was high. Zonna planned to purchase some of her wardrobe here. Local tailors, specially decorated their wares with Gyomlos' fabrics and it was almost impossible to buy them outside this city.

Zonna was to spend the next three days here to rest. During this time, Marzee was to stock the carriage with the necessary food for the onward journey to Raalo. Zonna herself had to pay a visit to the royal castle. It would be a breach of etiquette if, while in Gyomlos, she did not pay a visit to the ruling family. This could have led to a deterioration of relations between the states or even outright war. War for this seemingly trivial reason would not be the first one that Altea had seen.

In Sangeria, the Zerom family ruled. This was an old family that had had a hand in the battles against Raksa, members of this family being some of the territorial leaders from that war. They were descended, like the Sochi, from the Nords. An interesting story is that Sochi herself was a close friend and subject of the first Queen of Sangeria. It was not until eighty years later that her grandson, Balmasz, succeeded in claiming a piece of territory far to the south of what was then Sangeria. In later generations, there was no more such close friendship between members of the two families. Instead, there were no major conflicts for the sake of the memory of the ancestral friendship.

The carriage with the princess drove up to the palace itself. Here, the group split up. Sebastios and Marzee headed towards the centre of Gyomlos to make the necessary purchases. Zonna and Ramza, on the other hand, went to the castle. There they were stopped by an officer demanding to know the purpose of their visit.

"I am Zonna Sochi, heir to the throne of Balmaszeglodia. On my way to Raalo I have decided to stop in Gyomlos. As such, I would like to pay a visit to the local ruling family. With me came my bodyguard Ramza." She stated the purpose of her visit.

"I will immediately inform the members of our royal family about yours." The officer entered the castle, only to return a few minutes later with the information that King Tomaz himself would receive Zonna.

So they entered the castle and went towards the throne room. The corridors were long and every now and then they passed guards watching them closely. After a few minutes, they reached the open door of the hall, where the ruler of Sangeria was staying. He was a tall, handsome man of about thirty years of age with dark skin of light brown colour, white hair and brown eyes. Next to him stood a young woman who looked similar to him, although she was shorter by a head.

"Welcome to my kingdom Princess Zonna. I hope you enjoy your stay in our kingdom." Cried the Sangerian ruler with a smile, without waiting, at Zonnia's greeting.

"Welcome Your Majesty, I am glad to receive your personal welcome. So far your kingdom has left a good impression on me."

"I am very happy to hear that. I have heard that you are travelling to Raalo, I presume it is for the purpose of attending the Academy there?"

"Naturally that is my intention Your Majesty, is there something wrong with that?" Asked Zonna, wondering what purpose King Tomaz had in asking this question.

"No. Naturally not, but one step at a time. You don't have to address me Your Majesty, our families may not be particularly close now, but members of our families have always treated each other as equals and I would like to keep that tradition. Addressing me by my first name may be embarrassing for you due to our age difference, so just call me King Tomaz, alright?" He turned to Zonna with a smile encouragingly.

"I don't see any contraindication King Tomaz," he said.

"Great, then since we've got that behind us I'll get to the substance of my question. Well, my sister, Etiene here present," he pointed to a young woman similar to him, "is also going to Raalo Academy." He said with pride in his voice, at which Etiene blushed.

"My congratulations to both of you ." She stated sincerely to Zonna, not expecting to meet another person to attend the school with her so soon.

"That being said, I would like to propose that my sister go on the journey with you, she is already essentially ready and it would not delay your journey, while the protection I will give her will also increase your safety." Full of hope, he looked towards Zonna.

"I don't see obstacles to travelling together, and as you mentioned King Tomaz, our protections together will increase my and Princess Etiene's safety." After a moment, Zonna agreed, finding the King of Sangeria's argument appropriate.

"Ha Ha, great, I am very grateful to you Zonna. I have one more request." Terror grew in Etiene's eyes, she was afraid of what her brother might say next. "My sister is very shy and I would ask you to give her a chance and try to get to know her..."

"Brother, you promised!" She stomped her foot and ran out of Etiene's room.

"Sorry, my sister is really shy, but if she knows someone more closely she can show her temper. So how about it? Will you give my sister a chance?" He said already without smiling quite seriously.

"I can try, but it's not just up to me."

"I am grateful to you, come to the palace tonight at seventeen o'clock, I will organise your meeting and then you will have dinner together with my family, thank you again and see you later." He bowed his head slightly in acknowledgement and then left the room.

Zonna, together with Ramza, left the castle and went to meet Marzee and Sebastios. All four had to prepare for dinner with the Zerom family.

After taking a seat in the luxury hotel and preparing to leave, Zonna and her entourage set off for the castle. Once there, she was directed to the princess's chambers and informed that dinner would be at seven o'clock.

Zonna stood outside Etiene's room and knocked. At first she heard a noise and some rustling then the door opened. With a slightly wry smile she let her into her room. Only Marzee entered with her, and the brothers stayed outside the room. Inside, a huge map of Altea was visible in the foreground. There were piles of books on the desk and beside the bed. The sight was a good reminder of her own room cluttered with tomes on magic. Zonna sensed that perhaps the princess of Sangeria was a soulmate.

They sat down at a table and when Zonna wanted to speak Etiene warned her.

"You don't have to forcefully talk to me just because my brother asked you to," she said.

"You're right, initially that was the only reason, but after seeing your room I changed my mind. No, I'm not making fun of you." She warned before Etiene had time to say anything. "My room looks very similar only everything in it is related to magic. Then how do you tell me what's in those books?"

Confused and embarrassed, the princess of Sangeria lowered her gaze then timidly began to tell the story. She was interested in Altea. The whole continent, its history, the Maji races and magical creatures living there. Zonna, seeing how the stories about the continent opened Etienne up, asked her for a brief history of the continent. A beaming Etienne began her tale...
