At the Ninja Academy, the air was thick with silence during class time, and the same was true for Haru's classroom. All that could be heard were the voice of their teacher and the sound of pens scratching across paper. Haru and Nawaki sat in the back row, with Nawaki struggling to stay awake. Haru nudged him to refocus, knowing that while their teacher didn't mind if students didn't pay attention, it would be unacceptable for Nawaki to sleep openly in class.
Their teacher, Shohei, was a strong chunin who was surprisingly forgiving of his students' inattention. Most of the clan's children were either daydreaming like Nawaki or passing notes to one another, but they did so secretly, knowing that they would be punished if caught. Haru appreciated Shohei's teaching approach. Rather than forcing students to relearn what they already knew, he allowed them to work at their own pace. Haru found this freedom particularly appealing, as it allowed him to read what he was interested in without fear of being caught. But there was a practical reason for this approach as well. Haru knew that if Shohei forced the clan's kids to conform to the norm, it would only further arouse their rebellious mentality and drive them away from the rest of the students.
The first-year curriculum was largely a catch-up for the civilian students, so Shohei focused on helping them get up to speed. While he was lenient with the clan's kids, they were expected to be respectful and not disturb their classmates. Haru appreciated Shohei's responsible and thoughtful teaching and made a point to stay on his good side.
When you find something boring, time passes very slowly. Haru had finished his book, but the class was still going on. He paid little attention and realized that the lesson was about history, which instantly killed his interest. He had already read those books when he was just four years old. So, he looked around and saw Nawaki communicating with Chizo. He then started to daydream, but unlike Nawaki, he kept a stoic expression, making it seem like he was fully engaged in the lesson.
Haru's thoughts began to race as he began to think about his sealing practice. He felt that it was on the right track because he had already begun practicing basic seals under Mito's guidance. His physical strength was also gradually increasing. He didn't want to rush because he was still growing. He was focusing on building his body comprehensively, including qualities like agility, strength, speed, and balance to make them as solid as possible. So later on, he would get better results with less effort.
His current main focus was on improving his chakra. Even though he excelled in control, his chakra capacity was only average compared to someone like Nawaki. Mito had told him that control was the most important aspect in sealing, but Haru knew that this was only true for her because of her Uzumaki heritage and being the jinchuuriki of the Nine Tails. She could do all the seals by herself, but Haru would need far better chakra capacity to be able to do the more advanced seals by himself. He had been trying different methods, but he still hadn't found one that met his requirements. For now, all he could do was train and wait.
The sound of the classroom bell brought Haru out of his daze. He looked around and saw Nawaki's excited face, which he knew meant that it was break time. Haru got up and headed out to the school yard with the rest of the students. As he stepped outside, he was hit by the bright sunshine and the cool breeze. The yard was enormous, with lush green grass covering the entire area outside the school. All he could see were kids running around and playing. Haru and Nawaki went to their usual spot to meet up with their friends. He just sat there and watched as Nawaki immediately started playing with their Inuzuka and Akimichi classmates.
Even though they were still young, kids tend to stick around people who are like them. The civilians would play together, and those of the clans would stay together. It wasn't intentional; it was just about being comfortable. Kids from the clans had to be more careful when playing with civilians, so they didn't enjoy it as much. The civilians found the games of the clans boring because they lost most of the time. However, Haru knew that it was just because of the gap between them. As they grew older and started catching up, the relationships would ease up. On the other hand, there were three clans that Haru didn't think would change. First, there was the Aburame clan, and most children stayed away from them because of their family ninjutsu. The Uchiha, on the other hand, would just stay together and wouldn't play with anyone. Haru attributed that to their distance from the village as a whole clan. Unlike the Uchiha, the Hyuga would stay alone individually since their character was mostly serious and silent. This was largely due to their status as members of the side branch, which often resulted in them feeling more isolated and gloomy than the average child.
After what felt like an eternity to Nawaki, the school day finally came to an end. On their way back, Nawaki couldn't help but complain, "Aaah, those days are so hard. Not only do I have to put up with the boring school, but I also have to endure the tedious training. Life is so hard sometimes." Haru's mouth twitched, but he refrained from making any comment, knowing that Nawaki just wanted to vent. Nawaki noticed Haru's lack of response and looked at him, asking, "Come on, why don't you teach me something new? I know that Grandma allowed you to learn new ninjutsu."
Haru and Nawaki had already learned the E-rank techniques, such as the Body Replacement and Transformation techniques. While Nawaki was able to perform them, he was very ineffective at channeling his chakra, often using more than needed. Despite Haru's repeated reminders, Nawaki didn't correct his chakra usage. As a result, Mito punished him by forbidding him from learning any new ninjutsu until he could use his chakra effectively.
Nawaki kept nagging until Haru responded, "No, what Master did is for your own good. I agree with her. I've told you before, but you didn't listen. I think this is the only way for you to learn and not be so stubborn. I won't teach you anything, so stop nagging me already." Nawaki pouted, then jumped on Haru's back. "Then today's snacks are on you. I won't accept anything less," he said.Haru just chuckled and agreed.
As they walked, they passed by the villagers who were busy with their lives, going about their daily routines. The village was filled with vitality, with children playing and vendors selling their wares. Despite his frustration, Nawaki couldn't help but smile at the sight before him. He was reminded that this was the dream his grandfather and his clan had worked so hard to achieve, and he was proud to be a part of it.
