I wasn’t asleep. I don’t think one could fall asleep when the one they love sat quietly in the bed next to them, their hand lax in theirs. I merely sat still with my eyes closed in an attempt to drown out the fear that threatened to suffocate me.

“Nora and Maggie are here. They need to speak with you in the living room…”

“I’m not leaving Adel.”

“I’ll stay with her.” Miguel pinned me with a look that communicated that he would do anything to protect my mate. “I’ll let you know if there’s even one twitch of an eyebrow, Nix.”

“I can’t leave her…” I whispered to my Beta. “I made her a promise, Miguel.”

“I know, Nix. I know. But if Nora and her mother have life-changing information… I think Adel would understand leaving her for just a moment. I’ll be right here. I won’t leave her side until you come back. I promise.”
