Casey had been quiet ever since they had come home.
Lavinia kept herself together enough to get Casey to the library. It felt like so much of their life was spent there.
She wrapped Casey in blankets and kissed her head. “Stay here, my love.” She whispered before going to make drinks for the two of them.
Casey nodded somberly. Her gaze was hollow.
Lavinia’s mouth wavered to see her like this.
She would be strong for Casey if she could.
She turned but Casey’s hand caught her grip. She looked back to find Casey’s eyes wide with fear. “Please hurry.”
Lavinia swallowed. “Of course.”
She left, then, and almost ran to the kitchen. It was agony making the drinks. Every moment she believed one minute too long. She even made herself a hot chocolate.
In total, she was gone perhaps ten minutes, not including the time it took to leave and return.
