Chapter 57: Edward's secret weapon

The second assassin was short of stature and with a thin frame, this was someone who did not put much effort into physical training and instead, chose to focus completely on his magical skills.

The man pushed his left wand forward and began to cast a ball of fire.

"Here we go again…" Said Edward. "Iria, look for cover!"

The small ball of fire went flying towards its target for a bit, then, by using his right wand, the assessing conjured a strong gust that pushed the fire attack, increasing its speed and power.

Edward hid behind the biggest tree he could find. The fire spell hit the spot behind Edward, blowing up a big chunk of the tree and sending him to the ground.

"Ugg….what an annoyingly strong attack." While he was recovering, he decided to distract the assassin by making him talk.

"So…do you have a name?. If you are going to kill us, the least you can do is tell us your name."

The assassin just grunted and started con focus again to perform his next attack.

"Not much of a talker uh?." Edward made a sign for Iria to move and pointed to one spot. He was trying to tell her that they should attack the assassin from two spots.

Iria understood his intentions and nodded.

"Maybe I should call you Grunt, then. What do you think of that?"

The assassin grunted in response and gave Edward an angry scowl.

"What? you not going to tell me that you are mute, right?" Edward chuckled.

Grunt nodded his angry face and moved his wands forward.

"Well…now I feel like a swine. But then again…you are the one trying to kill us here." Edward gave Iria a gesture and pointed at Grunt's left hand, the one carrying the wind magic wand.

Grunt summoned his ball of fire and was about to enhance it with his wind magic when a water spell hit his hand and made him drop the wand.

"Wind gust!" Edward cast the strongest wind magic he could create and aimed it at the ball of fire.

When the fire spell was hit by Edward's magic, this one grew in size and power, but this time, the wind magic pushed the ball of fire in the opposite direction, which means, in the direction of the assassin.

The fire magic exploded in the assassin's face, sending him tumbling through the forest and hitting several trees in the process.

"Yes!, we did it!" Iria celebrated.

"Dear, let's not count the chicken eggs before they hatch," Edward advised. "We would do well and take some cov-"

Edward spotted something bright with his peripherical vision coming from his left.

"Move!" He shouted.

Iria did not even have time to move one step when a fire lance pierced her body. It entered through her back and left a hole in her belly.

Blood poured out of her mouth when she tried to speak.

"Shit!" Edward rushed as fast as he could to Iria while taking one of the blue potions from his bag. He managed to catch her as she was falling and shoved the potion in her mouth.

"Drink!"

She swallowed as much of the liquid as she could and Edward poured the rest over her wound. He then dragged her quickly behind a close by tree.

Iria was breathing hard and in a lot of pain, but the wound was closing fast.

"You are going to be fine. Don't worry…" But he knew that it won't matter unless he could beat this oponent.

'I guess I cannot count on someone else saving my ass this time…I'm going to have to finish this one myself…..ah…I wanted to avoid this if possible. I read that is very painful.'

He took a small box from his bag and opened it, revealing the 'Dragon Strength' pill. The rank 4 pill that he bought from the alchemist at great cost.

"I can't believe I have to use this so early…" He heard the approaching steps of the assassin and knew that there was no room for hesitation if he wanted to live. He took the black pill from the box, placed it in his mouth, and swallowed it.

The first thing he felt was a burning sensation in his throat and stomach, it almost felt like he had swallowed hot charcoal.

"Ahhgg!" He grunted in pain and almost fell down.

The burning sensation diminished down after a few seconds and now focused on the area around his navel. But it was not painful anymore…he felt invigorated and…

"I feel…strong…what is this…"

He could see whisps of white mist coming from his body.

"Mana…I can see it, swirling around me."

Edward then felt an approaching source of mana. And soon as able to spot it with his own eyes.

'The assassin…I can feel his presence as Siegfried does.'

The assassin had now recovered his wind wand and was slowly walking towards Edward with a lot of care. He had felt the change in Edward's cultivation but could not understand the reason so he was being cautious.

'I shouldn't dwell on this too much. According to Master Alfred, the effects only last a few minutes.'

The assassin, after seeing Edward lost in thought, decided to use his signature attack, hoping to finish the fight quickly.

He summoned the ball of fire with one wand and launched it, followed by the wind spell to increase its destructive power.

Edward saw the ball of fire approach and rose his wand. Without saying anything, he created a windshield that was five times bigger and stronger than his previous ones.

The ball of fire exploded after making contact with the shield, but Edward was left completely unscattered on the other side.

Grunt looked at the scene with an open mouth. This same attack had sent Edward flying before, but now he was able to block it with little effort, and he could not understand why.

Edward chuckled at seeing the baffled expression of the assassin.

"Oh…Grunt. Let me show you the power of money!"
