Penny fired off two rounds right as Wiyot lunged towards Halian. He grabbed him then ducked and covered as Greg and Sheila tucked themselves away from the bullets. Away to the side, Wiyot watched with Halian in his arms while Sheila targeted her gun at Penny.
“Make better choices”. Sheila said, his gun pointed right at Penny.
Takoda knocked himself right into Sheila. Sheila’s gun fired off and clipped part of the front porch. Arnold rushed over to his pickup truck as Calian jumped on Sheila and began to try to extract the gun out of her. Greg then pulled out a knife from his pocket and went for Calian. Wiyot jumped up and ran into Greg, causing him to fall over away from Calian and Sheila. All the while Arnold pulled up with his pickup truck.
“Get in!” Arnold shouted as Wiyot grabbed Halian and jumped in with Calian and Takoda right behind them. Penny stood there as Greg and Sheila began to compose themselves.
“Penny!” Takoda cried out. “Come!”
“I…” Penny started.
“Please!” Takoda said, his arm extended.
Penny looked back at Greg and Sheila who were getting back up. She then turned back to Takoda and took his hand, making the jump into Arnold’s pickup truck. Greg attempted to rush the pickup truck as Arnold drove away but to no avail. Sheila fired a couple of rounds at them. But alas, a few swings and all misses.
Inside the truck, Arnold was at the wheel while Penny was in the front seat. Wiyot, Halian, Takoda, and Calian were scrunched up together in the back seat. Wiyot took a look back and saw that Greg and Sheila were nowhere to be found. Wiyot turned back and looked at Halian as he wedged his way to the front.
“Arnold”. Wiyot started. “How close can you get us to Vancouver?”
“I can get you to the docks”. Arnold said. “From there you guys are going to have to get creative”.
“Stow aways?” Calian asked.
“Sounds good to me!” Takoda said.
“Do you think it’s going to work?” Halian asked.
“Doesn’t sound like we have much of a choice”. Calian said.
“Wait, so what’s going on with those guys?” Penny asked. “Why are they after you?”
The whole pickup truck was silent as Wiyot, Calian, Takoda, and Halian all looked at each other before they looked at Penny. Arnold continued to drive as the four of them sat in a dead silence before Takoda opened his mouth.
“Do you trust us, Penny?” Takoda asked.
“Yeah”. Penny said. “I think I do”.
“Please believe me when I say, those guys are full of shit”.
Penny gasped a little as she stared at Takoda. She then glanced at Wiyot, Calian, and Halian before she turned to Arnold who was focused on the wheel. She then came back to Takoda who had not moved an inch before she revealed a smirk.
“Yeah”. Penny said with a quiet smile. “They probably are full of shit”.
Arnold was steady at the wheel. He decided on taking some nearby backroads on a right-side exit. Part of it was dirt, but some of it was paved and had great views of the green hills that surrounded them. It was dark so the green blended in with the night’s sky as the full moon and the stars illuminated the road enough to keep the course.
At this point Halian, Calian, Takoda and Penny had fallen asleep. Outside of Arnold, Wiyot was the sole being that was still awake. Arnold reached down into his cup holders where a stick of gum was. He picked it up, put it in his mouth and began to chew with vigor.
“Trying to stay awake?” Wiyot asked.
“Yeah”. Arnold answered. “Didn’t have time to grab a cup of coffee. Regretting that now”.
“I think you made the right choice”.
“Looks like we’ve lost them”. Arnold said as he wound down his driver side window a bit.
“For now. I don’t know how but they seem to able to keep finding us”.
“I don’t understand it either. Everett isn’t that big, but it isn’t exactly like there is nowhere to go”.
“Well, hopefully that is all in the past now”. Wiyot said as his eyelids grew heavy. “So sick of it”.
“So, what do you want to go to Vancouver for?”
Wiyot paused at Arnold’s question. He turned to the back, looking at Calian, Takoda, and Halian, all three were fast asleep. He then looked at Penny who was dead asleep as well. Wiyot looked out of the rear windshield, staring into the nothingness within the darkness behind him before he picked his head back up.
“I know it looks like we’re just running away from something”. Wiyot began. “But we’re actually searching”.
“Searching?” Arnold asked. “For what?”
“For our place in this. For where we belong”.
“Where do you think you belong?”
“I guess that’s the question we want answered. We’ve been adrift for God knows how long. All we have is each other and the sense that something good is going to happen”.
“Something good is going to happen”. Arnold told Wiyot. “You just have to stay true to your dreams”.
“All dreams are spun from the same web”.
“…When you put it that way, makes sense”.
“I get where you’re coming though”. Arnold said as he tightened up his grip at the wheel. “When my daughter died, I had no idea how to tell right from left. I didn’t know where to go”.
Wiyot looked at Arnold as Arnold remained stoic at the wheel,. His eyes were wide and sharp as he navigated through the night. Wiyot then turned his gaze back forward looking out of the front windshield into what laid ahead of them.
“What happened to your daughter?” Wiyot asked.
“It’s a long story”. Arnold said without a single blink. “But it was a terrible accident. Ended my marriage shortly after. I had to rebuild everything. Didn’t think it was possible. But here I am”.
The road that Arnold was driving on got tighter as there were high beams at the end of it. The beams were so bright that Arnold had to come to a near dead stop to avoid hitting anything or just wading up his truck. Wiyot was however able to stare into the distance and see what was coming.
“What the hell?” Takoda said, waking up.
“What’s going on?” Halian asked, now awake as Calian began to open his eyes.
“Not sure”. Arnold replied. “Might be so sort of police checkpoint”.
“Huh?” Penny asked with a yawn.
“No worries”. Arnold said. “I haven’t been drinking so we’re good”.
Arnold drove into the light as the color of the car became more clear. Wiyot pushed himself forward as he began to make out what was going on. He sniffed and his pupils dilated as Arnold came to a stop in front of a grey Lexus.
Right in front of the car were Greg and Sheila, both with a smile.
