Christopher's heart sank at the sight of Abigail sitting in a chair, looking numb and lost in thought.
Her eyes were red from crying, and her face was etched with pain and worry.
He couldn't bear to see her like this. He rushed to her side, wrapping his arms around her in a tight embrace.
"Abi, I'm so sorry," Christopher whispered, choking with emotion. "I couldn't come sooner. I'm here now. Everything is going to be fine. Rachel is going to be fine."
He kissed the top of her head, hoping his words would alleviate her worry and fear a little.
Abigail buried her face in his chest, her body shaking with sobs. She clung to him tightly, her pain and fear pouring out in a torrent of tears.
Christopher held her close, stroking her hair as he whispered words of comfort. He knew how much Abigail loved her mother, and the fear of losing her was breaking her heart.
