The soft, almost imperceptible shift in his breathing was her first clue that something had changed. Before she could react, his eyes snapped open, a deep, lazy red—those familiar, piercing eyes, so sharp they seemed to cut through the dim light of the study.
It was obvious, the girl was utterly undone, flustered from head to toe.
"Well, well, well," he drawled, his voice a low rumble laced with dark amusement. "Look who decided to pay me a visit."
Alicia's heart thundered so loudly in her chest she was certain he could hear it. It felt as though it might leap straight out of her throat. "I—I wasn't—" she stammered, her voice barely more than a whisper. Her trembling hands worked frantically to free the necklace, but her fingers refused to cooperate, fumbling uselessly against the delicate chain.
