It was one of the starkest things I’d ever seen, and that was saying something. I’d always been something of a weirdness magnet, which was part of why I could come off as stand-offish. I needed to protect myself, never quite knowing what might be coming around the corner.

It was clearly some sort of message, even if I wasn’t sure what it said. Similar to a horse’s head in the bed but much cuter and not nearly as gross. The destroyed teddy added a surreal element to everything.

“Who would do this?” Ellis asked, looking into the teddy’s glassy eyes.

“I have a few guesses,” Olivia said, sounding surprisingly calm.

She was too fast. There were a few attempts to stop her progress but they were soon given up. Resistance was truly futile.

Like a tiny train, Hope made her way to the front step, reaching up, and more importantly snatching the severed teddy head from her father’s grasp before chugging away, trailing stuffing behind her.
