It was like a woodpecker on speed. Banging into the wood of the door like it was desperately searching for worms.

I woke up, realizing the sound was someone knocking. Gathering my breath, I managed to find my feet again and walk the rest of the way to the door.

Feeling cool smooth brass under my hand, I opened the door, mildly surprised at what was on the other side.

“Are you okay?” Jenny asked Luke, standing behind her in full kevlar like a bodyguard.

“Um, yes, I think so,” I said, scanning the room anyway, just in case there was an unseen threat.

“It's afternoon,” Luke said.

“How late?”

“About half past one,” Jenny said, checking her watch.

“The kids are already at school.”

“And Hope has been with us, and Anthony and Carl. I think it’s been a while since she’s had so much attention. I’m not quite sure she knows what to do with it.”
