Hot water cascaded down my body, easing away the aches of the morning. It was still early in the day but there had already been so much change.

I’d never thought about defending myself before everything, I’d never needed to. There were always people around to do everything for me from the time I was a child. People had planned my days for me most of my life.

It was a state of affairs I’d gotten used to while growing up. No one ever indicated I would ever have to be an adult. The idea being that I was the problem of my parents until I got married, and then I would be the responsibility of my husband.

Ellis filled the role in every way and did very well at it too. To the point, I didn’t even notice myself slipping away. Getting so used to what everyone wanted me to be, I wasn’t sure who I really was anymore.
