Chapitre 12: Chapter 12 - Life as a HBYE Trainee (2)

At the end of the second week of her new idol trainee life, Oh Min-Hee's roommate finally showed herself.

Her name was Ma Hwa-Young but first she introduced herself as Jess. She is a second generation Korean-Australian who came from Adelaide. She was late by two weeks because of her visa issues. The staff who brought her and stuff in and said Oh Min-Hee to be Jess's guide because both of them have the same classes except for English class.

After the staff left Jess and Oh Min-Hee, both of them were silent for a while. Oh Min-Hee, who just wanted to sleep after her intense day asked Jess.

"Do you need anything?"

Jess who heard that question replied chirpily.

"Yes…. Can you... help me… unpack… my stuff."

Jess said very slowly and carefully in Korean in case of any mispronunciation. Oh Min-Hee who was tired was about to flip off because she just asked the question as a curtesy but Jess literally took it. But on second thought, since Jess was going to be her roommate for the foreseeable future, it would be nice to be on good terms with her. Hence Oh Min-Hee said.

"Sure, I will help you and if you are more comfortable in speaking in English than Korean than you can."

Then Oh Min-Hee started speaking in English while unpacking one of the boxes.

"How was your journey? You must be exhausted form all the traveling but you don't look like someone who just travelled from one continent to another."

Jess was stunned when she heard her new roommate speak English fluently. It seemed her roommate also developed an accent which sounded American. She was already informed that she ought to speak Korean even if slowly because firstly, she was entering the K-pop industry were speaking Korean is mandatory. Secondly, many people don't understand or speak English well. Jess asked while she started unpacking another box.

"Wow, ya can speak in english, that ta with an American accent. Weah did ya leahrn it but that is not important. Ta fair the bloody offah but wen I signed the bloody contract, the bloody agency said ta speak in Korean so that I will be able ta talk mawah fluently in the bloody futah."

Now, Oh Min-Hee was shocked when she heard her English accent. She thought of speaking in English so that they would be able to communicate easily but she thinks is better of that Jess speaks in Korean so that she doesn't have to listen to a talking that difficult for her to understand. So she readily agreed.

After completing the unpacking work which almost took an hour, Jess said.

"I am… hungry… Min-Hee… lets… head to… the cafeteria…"

Jess already started calling Oh Min-Hee on first name basis. While unpacking, Oh Min-Hee already noticed the Jess had almost similar features with another famous K-Pop idol. But she didn't ask about this because she didn't want to know and she didn't care but Jess brought it up while walking.

"You must… have been… wondering… if I look… like Twice… Nayeon … from JYP…."

Oh Min-Hee gave her a questioning look but Jess still continued.

"You know… my friend… is interested… in K-POP…. She used… to say… how I am… similar to… a girl from… famous… girl group… I didn't …. used to believe … her… because… I don't … follow K-POP…. But… one day… my friend… went to… auditions… and I… wanted to be… supportive… so I went… along… and gave… audition… I got… a call… from HBYE… saying I… got selected… as a… trainee… At first… I didn't … believe but… HBYE… representative… came and… spoke to my… parents… and me… then I… understood… why I… was selected… It was… just because… of my… looks….I rejected… the offer… but my… parents told me… to go because… they have… three siblings… other than me… to take care… of… therefore… here I am.."

Oh Min-Hee then asked something.

"Is that why you colored your hair white because no one will mistake you as her?"

Jess was silent for a while. Then she replied.

"… Yes… "

Oh Min-Hee showed sympathy for her but was not able to say any comforting words therefore she just patted her back. After eating, they went back to her dorms and Oh Min-Hee went straight to her bed and dozed off.

The next week, Oh Min-Hee helped Jess get used to the schedule and helping her around but other than that it was same boring and tiring week as the previous weeks for Oh Min-Hee.
