Chapitre 94: 7.13

"Before we go, I'd just like to thank all of you for participating in the project. It truly means a lot." Helena told the room of attendings and residents, as she finished giving her presentation about the Africa Project.

As the room started slowly clapping, she heard Jackson complain. "Slow clap? They're giving her the slow clap?!"

After most of the attendings left the room, Helena turned to the group, as they left. "Jacks, I worked on this on my . I worked for that slow clap."

——

"Makena?" Derek asked as he and Helena entered on of the kids' rooms. "Hi, I'm Dr. Shepherd. And, of course, you know Dr. Campos . We're here to take a look at Zola today."

As the woman passed the crying baby to Derek, Helena explained. "Sometimes babies with spina bifida can develop Chiari malformation, which causes fluid buildup in the brain. It can be uncomfortable for the baby, but sometimes, if you adjust their head position..."

"It helps relieve the pressure." Derek finished, as the baby in his arms stopped crying, now in a more comfortable position for her. With a hand in her mouth, Zola smile up at Derek, her other hand on his cheek. "Let me see this. Let me see this face..."

"We've had her at the orphanage since she was two months old. This is the first time she's stopped crying since I can remember..." The woman smiled.

"Let's just run and MRI and check to see if she had a Chiari malformation or hydrocephalus." The neurosurgeon spoke to the resident, as her checked Zola's eyes with the flashlight. "If it's possible, we're gonna have to do a shunt, drain the fluid. I'll postpone the spinal surgery, but I think it's gonna be worth it."

In his arms, Zola grabbed the light source, taking its other end to her mouth.

"I think Zola here like you." Helena smiled, noticing the way Derek was looking at the baby.

"She can keep that lamplight." He chuckled, handing her over to Makena.

——

"The trick is to go in very slowly, until you feel a little give and then you should see some fluid." Derek told Lena, who did as instructed, seeing fluid pour into the Petri dish she was holding.

"Got it." She let out.

"Very nice." Derek complimented. "You know, what you're doing with the kids, it's really impressive. And, you know, even if I'd still like you steal you for neuro, you're doing great, Lena. Honestly, congratulations."

"Thank you." The small girl smiled under her mask.

——

"Ok, but what if the sitter is actually a baby snatcher?" Helena argued, as she rocked little Alice back and forth. She was wearing a sage green pantsuit, a blouse underneath, ready for Callie and Arizona's wedding. "You know that happens, that documentary the other day-"

"And that's why you shouldn't watch that much teu crime, honey. Ali's gonna be fine." Mark told his wife.

For Callie and Arizona's wedding, the couples had agreed to share a baby sitter, who would stay with Sofia and Alice at Callie's place, as the girls were still too young to attend.

"And what if Alice doesn't fall asleep? You know how she is, she falls asleep much faster when we're there and-"

"I'm sure she's more than qualified to take care of our little bean, Lee. Don't panic, she's gonna be fine. This is supposed to be one of the best sitters is Seattle." Mark told his wife, pressing a kiss to her temple. "Now go drop her off at Callie's, I'm gonna go put my suit on."

"Fine." She exhaled. "It's just that she's so tiny and...perfectly defenseless. It's one thing when she's at day care, I know that I'm just a few floors up. But she's gonna be so far from us..." Helena complained.

"I know, sweetheart, but it's gonna be fine." The man told her from their bedroom's bathroom. "Now you go, I'll meet you at the venue."

After a few minutes drive, Helena arrived at Callie's apartment, picking up the baby carrier. Leaving her baby with the baby sitter in the living room, after a very detailed explanation of what the baby was usually like, she knocked on the bedroom door.

"Arizona?" She questioned. "The sitter has the girls, Sofia's asleep and Alice's in the little portable crib."As she heard the sound of the shower working, Helena furrowed her brows and opened the door, popping her head into the room. "Arizona? Is everything alright? Cause we should get going..." As the blond came out of the bathroom, her eyes swollen and sniffling lightly, Helena fully entered the room, questioning. "What's wrong?"

At that, the blond woman shook her head as she stared at the bed, sniffling again. Then, with her voice shaky, she spoke up. "When I came out to my brother, he asked me if that meant that I was gonna marry a chick. And when I said yes, he had this big smile, and he said 'I'm gonna dance so hard at your wedding'." She let out a sad laugh, sniffling once more. "My dreams are coming true, dreams I didn't even know that I ... but my brother's not here. He's missing it. And I know that I am late, I know it. But why do you think my dad scheduled every minute of every day? If every minute is accounted for, there's not time to just slow down and just... I just..." Arizona looked back down to the floor, tears streaming down her face.

At that, Helena nodded in understanding. "You need a minute you miss him, you need to miss your brother." Sighing, she sat down in the woman's bed, tapping the place beside her for Arizona to sit down. As the blond did, Helena told her. "So let's take a minute, and let's miss your brother."

As Arizona laid her forehead on her friend's shoulder, sobs rocking her body, Helena placed a hand over her head, soothingly.

"I know..." She whispered.

And there they sat for a moment, in silence, both just missing the family members that weren't there for their weddings.

——

"You seem happy." Mark told his wife, as he walking into the kitchen, in the morning.
