Looking into her golden eyes, I realized that there was no point in lying to her of all things. I sigh and say, "For as long as I can remember, my grandfather has wanted me to join the council and become the most powerful witch in history but..."
She remains steady and says, [But that's not what you want, not anymore anyway.] I blink in surprise before nodding my head and saying, "I promised him but now I don't think I can keep that promise."
She sighs and says, [Promises are only meant to be broken, I saw that your grandfather has already passed. He's no longer here and even if he was, wouldn't he want you to be happy by doing what you want?] I bite the inside of my cheek as I think.
I nod my head and say, "I would like to think so." Abell nods and says, [Then do what makes you happy. Do what your heart wants to do. Be free. Live free. love free. That's what I was taught. Stop living for the dead when it's not making anyone happy.]
I lower my eyes, staring at the floor between us as I softly say, "You're right. If I were to keep blindly following this path, I'd have no one to blame other than myself." I guess I was now in uncharted territory, but I think I'm okay with that.
Abell and I speak for a while longer before I wake up and find myself looking up at a very familiar face. Bolin's finger traces the tips of my eyelashes as he softly says, "Welcome back." My lips tilt a bit as I smile up at him and say, "It's good to be back."
He helps me sit up, watching me closely with concern in his eyes. He softly says, "Each time you sleep longer and longer, is everything okay?" I nod and say, "As the Artifact grows more and more complete, it becomes stronger and stronger. When it sucks me in, it takes my magic a bit before it can overcome it but don't worry, I'm still stronger."
His eyes narrow on me, not liking what I've said but I just smile at him in return. He looks at me with annoyance and says, "This is nothing to smile about." I counter and say, "Oh, but it is." I give him a large smile as I say, "It's nice having someone concerned about me. It's a nice feeling."
Bolin's annoyance instantly disappears as he blinks in surprise. He slowly smiles at me as he reaches out and touches my cheek saying, "Seeing you smile like this is also a good feeling." My smile grows as I see him smiling back at me.
Yes, seeing the smile of someone you like really is a good feeling. Bolin drops his hand as Huan suddenly appears in the room. Bolin turns to Haun and says, "Get everything ready, I will be there in a moment." Haun silently bows and disappears without a word.
I frown, looking at Bolin as he sighs and says, "Something has come up and I have to take care of it. Stay here where it's safe until I get back. It should only take a few days at most. Haun will stay here with you so if you need anything, just call for him."
I slowly nod and say, "Okay." He gives me a small smile before leaning in and lightly kissing my forehead. He stands and walks out without another word, leaving me with a complicated gaze. Clearly, it was important, but he didn't want to tell me about it or take me with him.
I guess we all have things we don't wish to speak about or show others so for now, I'll respect that even if I don't necessarily like it. Mago finally speaks up and says, "I feel like I've been forced to eat a bunch of sweets! My teeth feel as if they're rotting!"
I roll my eyes as I say, "You don't even have teeth." He scoffs and says, "That's not the point! My eyes are burning! My ears are bleeding! This is torture I tell you!" I giggle a little before saying, "I never realized how dramatic you were until now. If it's so hard to watch, look away!"
Mago grumbles under his breath, knowing that he could leave and go into any other reflective surface but chooses not to. He then asks, "Are we really going to sit here the whole time?" I giggle a little and say, "No, while he's busy doing whatever he's doing, I will collect the final two pieces so I can be done with it."
Mago sighs and says, "That's more like it! We used to go on all kinds of missions with just the two of us! I'm tired of feeling like a third wheel!" I smirk and say, "Well, when the sun comes up, we'll go to the next town. Each town seems to be getting bigger though, have you noticed that?"
Mago 'Hmmms' before saying, "Now that you've mentioned it, it does seem that way. Do you think there's a reason for it?" I tilt my head in thought before saying, "Maybe? I've noticed the first one seemed random but as time progressed, the placements seemed more intentional."
Mago hisses out and says, "You think it has a mind of its own?" I slowly tap my chin in thought before saying, "I think it may have grown a conscience with the extra power from the ley lines. It's not impossible."
I stand up, walk over to the window and push it open. A cold breeze blows into the room as Mago asks, "Will that be a problem?" I look out and up at the night sky with uncertainty. I softly say, "To be honest, I'm not sure. I've never heard of an Artifact becoming sentient. I feel like we need to hurry though. The longer we wait, the more difficult things will be in the end."
Mago silently nods his head in agreement and says, "You're right but do you know how to travel like the big scary dude? If not, we'd have to travel by foot, and that would take forever." I slyly smile as I say, "I think I've figured it out. I've been watching him and paying attention. Once the sun comes up, we'll leave."
"Wait wait wait! What about the creepy dude that keeps popping up out of nowhere?" Mago asks with worry. I lightly chuckle as I turn and head back to the bed saying, "It won't be hard to give him the slip. Plus, even if he were to follow us, it's not that big of a deal."
Mago grumbles but he doesn't say anything else. I sit on the large bed, crossing my legs as I sit up straight. I lift my hand, calling my magic and finding myself slightly surprised! It was golden! I play with it in my hand, passing it over my fingers with delight, enjoying the way it feels.
Mago whistles and says, "Did you get an upgrade? I thought it was a fluke when I saw the golden light last time, but this means it's yours, right?" I slightly nod my head, wondering how it had turned golden when an image of the golden light from the tree flashes in my mind.
It was the tree? What was that tree and how did it do this? My mind races with a million questions but when I feel the sun on my face, I turn to find that it was already morning. I smirk as I step down off the bed. I stand in the middle of the room and close my eyes.
I focus on the dark magic, finding two places. I focus on the one closest to me and lock onto it. I slightly frown as I try to recall the exact feeling from Bolin and replicate it. A blindingly bright golden light flares up, basking everything in a warm golden light before I completely disappear.
Haun who just stepped into the room with breakfast drops the tray of food with a look of shock and fear on his face. He blinks before cursing and quickly disappears as well.
