Chapitre 13: Missionaries

Isla felt herself falling and she closed her eyes while waiting for death.

Her eyes were tightly shut as she prayed that death would come just right after the pain.

She waited for a while but death seemed to have forgotten her because neither did the pain come or death.

In total confusion, she gradually opened her eyes before blinking them slowly. She could feel a tight grip on her hand.

Was it her uncle or Logan? She wasn't sure. This made her more curious.

Isla lifted her gaze up and they landed on deep blond eyes. The hair was being blown by the wind.

Was his hair that light and soft?.

He pulled her up to her feet with just one hand before she could indulge herself in the thought.

Was she that weightless?.

Devon crossed his hands behind him. His eyes studied her.

Isla breathed in relief. She looked at the ground she almost fell from. Thank God, he actually sent a savior. That was when something hit her and she quickly remembered her promise.

Her cheeks burned red as she stared into Devon's deep burning gaze.

How can I possibly give myself to this man?.

Devon's eyes narrowed as if he knew her thoughts. This made her panic and she quickly thought of what to say in order to avoid the thought of her promise.

"Umm thank you for saving my life.. I.. I really appreciate" she said with gratitude.

"Hmm" that was all he said before walking away.

Isla sighed. She looked down again and shivered, wrapping her arms around herself. The thought that she almost died terrified her, thank God Devon came to her rescue even though he was the least person she expected.

The next day they got ready to leav8ng. She hid the truth that she almost died from both her uncle and Logan. Ava and Amelia were the last people to ever converse her mind.

She made something for them to eat. They ate except Devon who sat at a distance. He was leaning on a tree with his eyes closed.

She watched his calm features. His body was relaxed and he looked suffocating with his long lashes falling on his cheekbones like waves. She had no idea how long she had been staring yet she cared less. He was so captivating that she forgot why she came.

He stirred as if sensing her presence. Devon opened his eyes. They went straight to Isla's mesmerized eyes.

Isla gasped as his eyes seemed to be burning brightly. The blonde color was so rare. She hadn't seen anything like them before.

"Are you done?" His deep voice asked while he raised a brow.

Isla creased her face, trying to understand him and when she did, she turned her gaze away immediately while embarrassment took a hold of her.

"I.. umm.. I came to ask if you would like to get some."

"Some of what?"

"I cooked," she said with a half smile.

He looked at her blankly with his expressionless face giving no emotions.

"So would you like to have a taste?, I mean you haven't eaten anything," she pointed.

He only stared at her with a blank gaze.

If only he hadn't spoken to her a few times then she might have concluded that he was dumb.

"Are you sure you don't want to have a taste?" She asked to confirm.

He said nothing and instead clenched his jaw. Was he upset with her?.

But why? She shrugged, going back to the rest.

"We should be close to the village now," her uncle informed.

"The capital must be really far from here," Amelia said, looking at the far land to the east.

Ava nodded her head. They got to the village after the long walk.

It was almost noon. The people looked occupied.

They walked more, looking around with curiosity.

The people turned to look at the strangers. They frowned upon seeing them.

"Missionaries!" a man spat.

Isla felt the stiff atmosphere. She looked around and so the unsettling gaze they earned from the villagers.

"What are missionaries doing here?" A man bulky, tall and bald left his group and stood in front of them.

"What missionaries do," Logan said, catching the man's attention.

Amelia panicked "what is he doing?" She whispered to Ava.

"I don't know either," she frowned.

"Oh is that so? Such a shame we don't let missionaries have anything good to say once they leave here," he chuckled and looked at his group "they don't even have the privilege to leave here alive," he laughed, turning back to Logan.

His group joined him. Their laughter was disturbing as it sounded forced.

"Then it is really a shame," it sounded like a normal reply but one could feel the hidden meaning from it.

The group also felt it and they paused. It looked like they were trying to understand the meaning behind his words.

The leader was the first to understand, he immediately drew his sword out.

Isla froze in shock as panic hit her. No! this was bad. He had no sword for crying out loud. Can he even fight with it if he had one?.

"How dare you come into this village to insult us?" He spoke in anger. His voice was loud and everyone around them gathered to watch what would unfold.

He weaved the sword in the air before aiming for Logan who stood there unbothered.

Isla placed herself in front of him instinctively. The sword was just an inch away from her neck.

Logan's eyes widened upon seeing this.

"Isla!" Oliver screamed in terror.

Ameila was shocked by how everything flipped around in just a blink of an eye.

"Help! Help!"

A loud cry for help resounded through the crowd.
