As the soft moonlight pierced through my eyelids, I woke up with a start.

'I need blood.' I felt a pang of hunger in my chest. How long had I been asleep? I wondered. Every five years when I woke up like this, these were my first questions.

"Why?" The wound in my soul did not heal, not even a bit.

I pushed open the lid of the coffin that served as my bed. It was hard and cold, but I was used to it.

Usually, every five years when I felt the urge to feed, I would rise from my slumber. The tree Nymphs who lived under my protection would greet me with joy and reverence. They called this day my waking day.

But this time, something was wrong. There was no one to welcome me. The huge hall where I rested was silent and empty. "What happened here?" I muttered, feeling a surge of fear.
