Chapter 33: The Ship and the Anchor
'Why did I lose?' William put his hand to his bandaged stomach. The wound was already in the process of healing, but most likely a scar would remain. The cut on his eye would also remain as evidence of his most recent fight, he was lucky not to lose it. 'Was I too hasty? But something inside me told me that I should fight like this.'
He was alone in the room, and Debris hadn't said anything since Kenley had dragged him out of John Maynard's house.
'Are these my Berserker instincts?' He frowned in frustration. It had all happened so fast that he couldn't do anything. He had cards up his sleeve like Debris or even the silver cross Adam had given him, and yet he had no chance to use any of them. He hadn't wanted to use Debris for fear of the Nighthawks finding out this secret, but what good would it do to keep a secret if he was dead?
'Shit.'
"At least you realized it." The familiar voice of his sword sounded in William's mind.
'Debris, are you still mad?' He asked her with some regret in his voice.
"..." She didn't reply for a few seconds. "Idiot, I'm not mad."
William was surprised since he had assumed otherwise.
'And why didn't you speak until...' William's question was interrupted by a sob.
"I was so worried. That woman was going to kill you, I thought I was going to lose you." Debris sounded more human than ever this time, and William could detect the pain in her voice.
He couldn't do anything but close his eyes.
'Sorry, I should have been more careful.'
However, Debris's sobs did not stop.
"It's not your fault, I should have realized that a Sequence 6 Beyonder should be more powerful than what she was showing."
William looked at the sword that had been with him since he appeared in this world. 'I can't depend on you for something like that, don't blame yourself when the cause of this was my impulsiveness.'
"I know, it's just... I've been alone for so long... I promised myself that when I found a bearer I would help them as much as I could. If I had really lost you, I don't know what I would have done." Debris' feelings came out, but William didn't know what to do.
He placed a hand on the hilt of his sword and sighed.
'I don't know how long you've been alone, but now we're together. Instead of blaming ourselves, we should work so that this doesn't happen again.' He pursed his lips, and a fire lit up inside him.
This was the Beyonder world. Madness and death would always be around the corner, and to keep from succumbing to them he needed more power. But he knew, the more power, the harder it was to fight the madness.
'What should I do?' It seemed that there was no real solution to this problem for the Beyonders. Fortunately, he was not a normal Beyonder.
"Darling…" Debris recovered from her previous state and seemed to have the same fire within her as William himself. "You focus on the power, Darling, let me take care of the other part. If you are a boat that wants to become a great ship, let me be your anchor."
A slight smile appeared on William's face, and he stood up. 'That sounds like a good idea.'
He had not died. This loss had been frustrating, of course, but in the end, he had survived, and what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.
"I should go see the Captain. They should be able to take out Madam Sharon or capture her, at least I know my hit did some serious damage." William spoke out loud as he left the room at Blackthorn Security Company.
"Oh, I was just on my way to find you. The Captain wants to talk to you." He caught up with Royale, who was about to knock on the door.
"Really? Perfect, I already meant to go see him. Thanks for giving me the message." He gave her a nod as he smiled. "Oh, and I owe you another thank you. You can tell I'm still alive thanks to you."
He bowed in thanks and then left. Royale didn't show much expression, but her eyes had a certain relief in them.

Shorter chapter than usual, but I felt extending it beyond here would be a bit forced.
