Chapter 29: Berserker

Bang!

The Nighthawks at Blackthorn Security Company were instantly alarmed by the loud noise that came from the basement. They armed themselves in less than ten seconds and hurried downstairs.

"What happened?" The first to enter was Leonard Mitchell, and he was also the first to see how the potions room had turned out.

There were some cracks in the walls and floor, as well as pieces of wood that appeared to be the remains of various pieces of furniture. Crestet Cesimir had just closed the silver suitcase he was carrying with him, and next to him on the floor was an unconscious William.

"Don't worry, it's fine." Before the situation got out of hand, Crestet stepped in to clear up a possible misunderstanding. "This was part of a ritual necessary for Lord Hastur to reach Sequence 8."

The Tingen Nighthawks calmed down and breathed a sigh of relief.

"A ritual? I didn't know something like that could be needed for low Sequences." Dunn commented as he picked William up off the ground and asked Kenley to carry him upstairs.

Crestet smiled at his words. "It seems that the pathway Mr. Hastur follows is particularly mysterious, even if the Beyonder world could be considered the definition of mystery itself." He got up and cleaned the black windbreaker that had become a bit messy. "From my conversation with him, I'm guessing I'll be back shortly; however, my work here is done for the time being."

"I appreciate you taking the trouble to come in person, Your Grace." Dunn Smith bowed formally, looking very dignified even after running downstairs a few seconds earlier.

"No problem, you have some interesting people with you. More than one person here will likely end up being my direct subordinate before too long, so it's good to build some relationships." His gaze went imperceptibly to Klein and Leonard, that were behind the Captain. "That's all from my side, send me a letter again if another breakthrough needs to be prepared."

"I will, Your Grace. Praise the Lady." Dunn Smith touched his chest four times in a clockwise direction, and everyone else in the room did the same.

William didn't wake up until the next day, and when he did he felt like he'd slept two whole days straight.

"That guy, Crestet Cesimir, sure is powerful." He remembered how in his out-of-control state he fought against the high-ranking Deacon. His technique with the sword hadn't been much better than William's, but he formed strange attacks that puzzled him. Before he knew it, the two minutes required for the ritual had already passed, and he hadn't hit the Red Glove even once.

William wanted to take refuge in the idea that he had not been able to use a sword in the fight, although he quickly accepted that the result would have been the same.

Still, he thought about the benefits of having reached Sequence 8: Berserker.

His physical abilities had increased to an inhuman point, being able to crack rocks with his blows and even bend a steel bar with his hands if he exerted himself. His fighting instincts were also enhanced.

There was something that particularly caught William's attention. Apparently, the Berserker received an ability called Wrath that allowed him to temporarily increase his strength, resistance, and speed in exchange for becoming impulsive in combat.

He wouldn't hit an ally, but he would lose precision with his sword to trade it for brute force. It would be useful to catch an enemy off guard in the middle of combat, but in a long fight, it would be dangerous to use this skill, so it had to be used with care.

Overall, he felt that the improvements had been substantial, and his combat power had skyrocketed.

"Good morning, I thought it would take you a little longer to wake up." The Captain's voice reached his ears, and only then did he realize that he had slept on one of the Blackthorn Security Company couches.

"Ah, good morning, Captain." He greeted him with a smile. "How long have I been sleeping?"

"Not that long, just about ten hours." Dunn sat down in a chair as he continued talking to William. "How are you feeling? Do you hear a lot of murmuring?"

William raised an eyebrow.

"Actually, no. I didn't feel like I was about to lose control when I drank my first potion either." He stroked his chin, trying to understand why.

"Is that so?" Dunn leaned back in his chair. "Honestly, it doesn't surprise me as much as it could. Some pathways have a penchant for throwing the Beyonder out of control, while others do the opposite."

William nodded, having already guessed this.

"By the way, it looks like Member of Parliament John Maynard's party will be held in three days. I hope you're prepared." This got William's attention.

"I know what I must do. I will report immediately if the Demoness Sect's member is found." His tone of voice changed to a much more professional one. "However, what should I do in case the enemy Beyonder decides to attack me?"

Dunn seemed to think about it for a moment, then gave an answer.

"To be safe, I'll send another member with you. Royale is good at hiding, so she won't be noticed easily. With two people, you should be able to take down the enemy."

Williams nodded. "Okay, I'll do my best, then."

"For now, rest a little longer. I don't think you would have recovered so quickly from a fight with a high-ranking Deacon, even if he didn't go all out." The Captain chuckled at William's embarrassed expression, who didn't want to bring the subject up again.

"I'll go home, then. Say hello to the others for me, and tell Leonard he should be careful because I've already reached his level."

And so, having left the last word and ignoring the previous topic, he set off for his house with his mind distracted by his next mission.
