Turns out that Mom sent a whole lot more than water, she also sent us lunch. Bless her.
"Your mom's cooking is so awesome Taylor, I'm so lucky." dad said with a full mouth with a look of satisfaction on his face. I felt the same way, mom was the best.
"Taylor, how do you feel? How's your side?" Dad asked.
"It still hurts but I'm feeling alright." I answered. He gave me a smile. "I'm sorry if i went too hard on you."
"I get it dad." I told him. "How's your hand and err...umm private area." I asked embarrassed. Because one I had actually kneed my dad in the crotch, second because just asking was weird all on its own.
He burst out laughing. "My hand and private area are fine. See."
He moved his hand around and thrust his hips forward. I threw my face in the other direction. "Eww!" I squealed. "Really Dad!"
He laughed even harder.
"You did good though. Some more training and you could give me a run for my money." I smiled to myself in response. A lot more training would be needed.
"Dad are we gonna train some more?" I asked. He looked at me shocked, and turned away from me and scratched his face.
"Umm Taylor, maybe you should rest so you won't over exert yourself" he said.
"Oh thank God!" I yelled and dug into my food some more. He let out a loud chuckle.
"What would you have done if I said we would continue?" he asked, curious with a smile on his lips.
"I would have cried and begged." I replied with a smile on my face, but I was dead serious. My body couldn't take anymore.
"Dad, what are you gonna do now? Mom said you couldn't be home till 6."
"Do you have somewhere to be?" He asked.
"Nope." I replied happily and continued munching away
"Yay! Father-Daughter bonding time!" he squealed.
"This isn't a ploy to win another bet again, is it?" I asked with narrowed eyes.
"No." he answered, while turning away from me again.
"Sure dad." I snorted, not believing him.
"What fun activity, do you have planned?"
"I didn't plan anything, but I thought you and I could go run some errands around the pack." He checked his watch. "It's 1:15 PM right now, still got five hours to go. You wanna come?"
"Alright, I will." I replied. Though my stomach was getting queasy just thinking about it.
"I'll figure out a routine by tomorrow, for now think of this as a field trip, part of your training." He offered.
I nodded "Okay dad."
With that we continued our lunch, after we were done, we sat in silence for awhile. I closed my eyes, just enjoying the peace and quiet.
The my dad came out of the blue. "I know what happened with Jenna."
My eyes snapped open.
"Dad?" I asked
"The night of the last trails?" He continued.
"I was there sweetheart, when you were in the infirmary. I heard your discussion with Jenna."
I looked at him, shocked. "You knew?!" I shouted. I looked at him with anger, shock still in my system. "Then why didn't you say anything?"
"The better question is why, YOU didn't say anything." He redirected at me.
"No one would believe me!" I said with a frown. "Besides, if I were faster or stronger, I would have made it. it's not her fault I'm lacking." I whispered, my voice lowered.
He let out a sigh. "You're both right and wrong. You're right in saying that it's not her fault, you are the way you are. But you are not lacking, you hear me."
"Every great story starts from somewhere. Jenna on the other hand, wanted to undermine you by doing what she did. To injure you and drag you that far from the safe zone. She was just being petty."
"If you knew this, then why is Jenna handling things with you now? Why are so close to her? Why are you acting like it didn't happen?!" I practically yelled the last bit, I felt hurt and I wanted answers.
"Because I love her." he answered quietly. I felt a sharp ache in chest. The peace was officially gone now, but it was still quiet.
"More than me." I whispered. It wasn't a question, it was a fact. "Obviously, a lot more than me." I turned my face away from him.
"No!" Dad said. "Not more than you. I love you both equally." He said.
He sighed again. He has been sighing a lot these days I noticed.
"Jenna is my daughter, just like you are. I promised her parents I would look out for her."
"Dad she hates me, how can you still say that… Even after knowing what you do?" I questioned. The pain from earlier was still sharp and clear.
"She doesn't hate you. She might say that, she might even believe that. But she doesn't."
'How would you know? You don't know how it feels to be treated that way.' I thought
"When Jenna came to us, she was small, frail and weak. Her parents worried about her and couldn't stand the thought of losing her. They were rogues, but they wanted Jenna to be born in a pack, so she could have a better future.
They left the pack one day to find a way to make her better. They never returned."
Despite my urge to get up and leave, I stayed put and listened to what my dad was saying.
"A couple weeks later, a man from another pack brought her home to us and told us her parents had died in battle, they had gotten mixed up in tensions they weren't aware of so they were killed." He took a deep breath before continuing.
"Both packs apparently drew the line at killing a child that young, so they let her live. The man that brought her back was called Amadeus, he gave us medicine and charms that were meant to heal and protect her. As if it could make up for any of the misfortune." There was anger in his tone in the last bit.
"Anyway we took them, but we demanded blood for their deaths." he turned to me.
"Remember this Taylor, When Innocent Blood Is Spilled, There Must Be A Price And The Price Must Be Payed In Blood."
He looked away and faced the woods in thought. "Where was I?" he asked.
"Amaedeus." I answered. He growled low, like the name was some kind of evil, but continued.
"We demanded a pound of flesh, for the pack. For Ourselves And Jenna, who was orphaned. Amaedeus offered himself, saying he had the one that kill them, he also offered his blood. He said that where the medicines would fail, his blood would not. He gave your mother and I vials with blood and said to guard them, we took them but we didn't believe him. I quite personally had no intention of using them.
After he was killed, we raised Jenna as our own."
He turned back to me. "Your mother and I were finding it difficult to have pups at the time, so we adopted Jenna.
As time went on, the medicines ran out, the charms stopped working and she was still very sick. Your mother and I thought we would lose her, in a fit of desperation, your mother went behind my back and mixed a vial of blood in her formula, I was so pissed at her for doing that." He chuckled.
"But once Jenna drank it there was improvement. Significant improvement."
There were tears glistening in his eyes, happy tears.
