Chapitre 15: Divergence (3) - 13

The rest of the month was spent teaching Kanao the breathing style, teaching myself the breathing style, and sparring with Shinobu whenever I finished earlier than Kanao.

During this whole time, Tanjiro had mastered total concentration breathing constant, and the others were close too.

Kanao, on the other hand, had been able to learn this first two forms of my breathing style, and we had stopped right there, as she knew that I couldn't reveal all of my secrets, and this was the most she could learn for free.

I mean, it was kind of a waste to be honest, as depending on what happened in the future, she would most likely die to my hand.

Her talent was just so monstrous, and it was too bad that I wouldn't be able to bring her with me to the next world.

But what if I could?

Taking out a piece of paper, I wrote,

"System, can I change one of the benefits that I have if I give something else?"

I had to wait for a few seconds, but just like I had expected, the system responded.

[Of course! What would you like to trade for?]

"Allow me to bring two people with me from each world to the next."

[And what are you willing to sacrifice?]

"I'll sacrifice the Kioshi personality, is that enough?"

Reading this, Kioshi started screaming in my brain, and my hand even started twitching as he tried to take control of this body, but he was no match for me.

Anyways, seeing that the system wasn't responding, I decided to sweeten the deal.

"I'll give up all the other personalities that I may get in the other worlds except for one of my choosing."

[Deal!]

And with that, Kioshi vanished.

Well, the parts of my brain that he had influenced were still there, so unfortunately, I was still in love with my sister, but now, I could finally speak.

"Hello world."

Like a computer, those became my first words spoken in this body.

Now satisfied with everything, I jumped off the roof and found Kanao.

"Do you want to go test out the new breathing style in battle?"

Hearing my voice for the first time, she turned around with her eyes wide open.

"You can speak?"

"Of course, I chose to abstain to remind myself of a tragedy, but I have finally healed myself of my old wounds."

"Do you have a name?" She asked.

"My name is still Nameless. I am a person that has had many names, causing me to forget my real one."

This was actually true, because, you see, my parents had never given me a proper name before.

I was, and would always be, "Nameless".

Back to the conversation, Kanao stayed silent for a while before taking out her coin and flipping it.

"It's heads, I'll go with you."

"Then may we find a demon quickly."

We quickly left the vicinity of the mansion.

...

I led her to a random field before stopping.

"Where's the demon?" She asked from behind me.

"Here." I said, pointing at myself.

Taking off my mask, I released my blood demon art, causing my eyes to flicker red, before turning and showing my number.

"Lower Moon 1."

Turning around to look at her, I could see her own eyes waver.

"I want to test how far you've grown, would you honor me with a spar?"

To show that I wouldn't use any demon attributes or techniques, I reapplied my blood demon art and stood in front of her as a human once again.

Holding my chokuto out in front of me, I looked at her, waiting for her to chose her weapon.

After all, she had grown in the habit of holding a chokuto in her hand at all times whilst also carrying a katana at her side.

But she was being indecisive, I could tell.

"Why did you teach me?" She asked in a voice, quieter than a whisper.

"Because I deemed you worthy enough. Art is something that transcends skin color, heritage, or race, it is something that all can enjoy, and something that all can learn."

"If I happen to die today, at least take those words to heart. One must never discriminate or be prejudiced unless they truly know the essence of the other individual."

"So now, I ask, will you fight me?"

I watched as she closed her eyes for a second before holding her chokuto out in front of her.

"I will."

And with that, we started.

Flash after flash of light descended on the surrounding area as we moved at speeds faster than most Hashira could see.

The sounds of our battle never left the area though as I had already used my blood demon art to soundproof the battleground.

So, with one hand each, we fought, a fight that would shape the course of this world itself.

"Why do you hate demons?" I asked her.

"A demon killed my older sister."

"But does that mean that all demons must be faulted? If it had been a person that had killed your older sister, would you have gone and become a killer specialized in killing humans?"

"..."

"N-no..."

"Then why must demons be killed? Although we kill humans, is it not right for the predator to devour the prey?"

"Then is it not right for the prey to find a way to combat the predator?"

"Touché... I guess we are all just doing what the lowliest of animals will do."

"But then, what qualms do you have with me? Prey won't just attack their predator for no reason. They will only lash back when hurt, so why do you need to kill me, someone that has never hurt a hair on your body in my entire life?"

"But you have devoured countless of my race, it is only natural that I avenge them."

"Ah, this matter of revenge, a cycle of never ending bloodbaths and war, would you like to stop it?"

"I would do anything to."

"But it seems like your answer to this problem is to exterminate us demons, isn't it?"

"..."

"So, in order to break this cycle, one side must completely destroy the other?" I asked.

"Y-yes."

Although she was unsure of her answer, I had always known that this was the only way.

Sheathing my chokuto full and bringing it to my side, I stopped fighting.

"You have enlightened me, my dear Kanao, let us meet again if fate allows it."

So, suddenly, without warning, I phased away.

She was left standing there, in that field, panting as she looked at the wide swath of destruction that we had created.

Bringing her chokuto back to her side, she too phased away.

The only thing left was an eerie silence.
