Sofia's POV
She didn't even blink. But rather pretend like she didn't hear anything which I know she did.
"Did you hear what I asked Cheryl?" I insisted, she flipped her hair backward before turning to look at me, with a complicated expression on her face that I could not fathom. Did she have an idea about it?. If she was only a worker, why such an expression on her face?
Her expression was not complicated, but rather scary. What in the world is happening? I took a step backward in fright.
"I'm only a worker here, so you don't have to worry. I know nothing about GODA. And I'm not interested in knowing what it means. I'm only concerned about the money I get paid here and nothing else". She told me, with a smile on her face, trying to shield the scary look I noticed earlier.
"Dead zone!. Why did you say that? And what about the look on your face?"
I reminded her, pointing at her face. "As I said earlier, I'm only a worker here and know nothing about GODA. So, if you don't mind, I would like to go have my lunch now. Are you coming or do you want to know what GODA means before coming?".
I shook my head in denial and followed behind her, trying to be careful around her.
Sofia, you need to be vigilant, don't trust people easily, it's risky. I told myself as I walked quietly behind her.
When we were done eating, we went back to her desk and she searched over her computer for some stuff? But then, her phone rang. She picked it up. With the phone still pressed against her ear, she turned and looked at me. "Be on guard", she whispered and she blinked a few times before she hung up on the phone. "Is anything the problem?".
I asked when she hung up and was in deep thought. "I don't know if there is a problem or not, some stranger just called me and asked me to be on guard. That's weird because I have never received such calls or messages ".
Ok, that got me. She has never had such calls, just when I was around for her to receive such calls. This is my life. A Life filled with horror. I instantly felt dizzy and I just needed to get some rest, maybe an eternal rest.
"Ok, I will just head up to my room now. I will commence work tomorrow ".
Her expression was calm and I wonder why she was not freaking out.
"Alright, I will send someone to your room, to come to give you what you will be needing". She told me, looking quite alright with no emotion on her face.
"You don't have to, I will come to take them down here". I don't want random strangers banging at my room door. I was the only one who knew what was going to happen.
"Alright then, you can go now. Make sure to have enough rest. You look stressed out".
I nodded at her before turning to take the elevator.
****
The room was quite freezing, the next morning. I found myself shivering on the bed. That's when I remembered I forgot to turn off the air conditioner. I rubbed my sleepers open, letting a yarn leave my mouth and stretching my hands up in the air, and then took my leg out of the duvet that was covering them. I lazily dragged myself out of the bed and picked up the air conditioner remote and switched it off before walking to the bathroom to freshen up.
Having done that, I put on one of my favorite shirts, the red one with the name LION written on it. The one Rochelle got me. It brings memories of her and that of my family too. I put on a pair of black jeans and the pair of black slippers I have been traveling with. I then proceeded to get the one thing that reminded me of my mother, her necklace, the only asset of hers that I was able to get. I supposedly put my hand, where I knew it should be, but to my greatest dismay, I couldn't find it. I hesitated for a bit, with fear slowly erupting from my chest, I put my hand further into the back, but yet I still couldn't find anything. Trying not to believe that I must carelessly drop it somewhere, due to my recent movements from one town to another, I carried the backpack with every content in it and dropped it on the neatly arranged bed. Who cares if it was arranged or not, all I needed was that necklace.
With the entire contents of the backpack on the bed, I scattered everything on the bed, turning the dresses upside down, even the bedspread but still, I couldn't find anything. I then proceeded to the closet, it might have fallen there somehow. But nothing was seen.
I remember carrying that necklace with me all along so why am I not seeing it?. Oh, wait! During the train accident, did it fall from my hand? But I made sure to hold it tight in my hand. I made sure to keep it safe. What did I do? Lord, I lost the only precious memory I have. Wait, that blue eye man with his ash-brown hair. The one who saved me and later on wanted to choke me to death. It was an expensive necklace, worth over a million dollars? He tried to save me in an attempt to snuggle my necklace out of my hand, which means he has been watching it the entire time and probably thinking about taking it, and then he planned with his men to set the train on fire and make it look like an accident. How lowly could he stoop? He took it away from me to go sell it.
I slumped down to the floor that was near the bed and rested my head on it, with tears flowing down my cheeks uncontrollably. I lost the chain on the train. The only precious memory I have left. He should be careful and pray that I don't ever set my eyes on him or else, he and his subordinates are going to pay dearly for this loss and if they don't return it to me, they would pay with their lives.
I needed to be strong and get myself together. I woke up from the floor and dried my eyes. I didn't bother to fix the mess I made in the room, I straightened the hem of my shirt. And stepped out of the room, locking them down behind me. Each time I hold the key in my hand and see the word GODA., I always have this odd feeling right within me, a feeling which I couldn't explain.
As always. I let it slide by and walk past the long hallway, taking the elevator and making my way downstairs.
As I stepped out of the elevator, my eyes darted to the front desk where Cheryl works. I didn't see her but the blond lady she greeted yesterday out of her desk. She forced a smile when she saw me. I didn't return it but rather walked over to her.
"Good morning " I greeted with my hands resting on the desk with no hint of emotion on my face.
"Good morning. My name is Alice, how about you?". I only greeted you and I didn't ask your name.
"Uhmm .my name is Sofia". I hesitated before telling her my name. She smiled and extended her hand over to me in a salute but I did not take it with the pretext that my finger had a fracture and could not make salutations.
"Alright, understood. Has Cheryl told you what you would be doing?" Thank goodness you understood because there was no way on earth I was going to shake hands with you.
"That's why I came down here". She made an O expression before concentrating on her phone.
Before I could take my seat in the position yesterday, Cheryl walked in with a brought smile on her face and I returned her smile.
"Sorry, I went to sort out some things with the branch manager. It's work time and I will need you all to start work immediately. Sofia, you would be cleaning room 26 for the moment, till when the guest in the room leaves". She said with her gaze fixed on her computer and I was taken aback. That's the room of the cowboy who checked in just yesterday and was all creepy on me and now I will be cleaning his room. This is not happening. "Could I just clean somewhere else, I mean somebody else's, or Alice could clean his room?".
