Even in his dazed state, Ovi had known that the best thing he could do for himself at the moment was to get as far away from Furman as possible, so the moment he felt himself land on the ground after Furman's sweeping kick, He had rolled away from the man that had dealt him so much damage in so little time.
Furman had watched his opponent roll away and clicked his tongue in disgust. He could have followed the man but he had instead chosen to pick Ovi's weapon. One of the two axes that he had dropped when he had fallen on his back. Furman had quickly palmed the axe and stood up just in time to see Ovi also kip-up to his feet.
The two men had started advancing towards each other carefully and were still circling each other in a face-off when the rumbling of metal announced the opening of the east gate. The two men had refused to look away from each other, but the crowd's gasp that followed had been too much to ignore and all pretense had been dropped as their curiosity won over.
ROARRRRRR!!
Ovi took a step back and Furman's eyes widened. All hostility between the two men was lost as they turned their attention to the open room where the roar had come from.
ROARRRRRR!!!
A second roar, much louder and stronger than the first one emanated from the dark room, and the two men shared a wondering look. Before it even showed its powerful body, they felt its weight beneath their feet. It was as if the earth was bowing to the majestic 500lb of pure muscle that was emerging from the dark room.
It burst out from the darkness with blinding speed. Its growls spoke of its anger at being caged and its hunger for the two walking lumps of meat in its path. The two men had just enough time to jump away from the lion's path in opposite directions before it pounced on them.
The beast turned at once with an annoyed growl and rushed at the nearby fighter, Ovi. He was still lying on the floor when the lion pounced. His life flashed Infront of his eyes as he saw the large and sharp teeth coming dangerously close to his face.
"Not today, furball!" Ovi shouted and rolled away from the lion's path just as it landed where he had lain just a second ago.
The beast turned to look at the stubborn prey and Ovi swung his axe with a grunt of strength at the side of the lion's head. The axe connected with a victorious crunch followed by a gush of blood and the beast reared on its hind legs with a loud howl of pain as it got blinded by its own blood.
Furman saw his chance and let his own sword that he had found lying in the sand when he had escaped the lion's first attack fly. The sword pierced the animal's chest but failed to go deep, a testament to the lion's thick skin. The beast knocked away the annoying weapon stuck in his chest and then turned his full attention on Furman, Ovi was now forgotten in its fury. Its priorities had just undergone a massive chase.
In the beast's mind, Ovi represented the embodiment of challenge and for that matter deserved to be treated like any male of its kind. That privilege also came with the elevation from side dish to the main course. In order words, Furman was now at the top on the animal's list of who to eat first Whiles Ovi was second.
With another roar, the lion shot off with blinding speed towards his prey. Its mind was now made up. Furman had to die.
Furman's eyes widened when he saw the lion coming at him. He had banked on the fact that the lion was going to waste time deciding which among the two fighters to pick. A mistake that he had just realized. He side-stepped a lunge from the big animal and raised the axe he had taken from Ovi high over his head. Ready to deal the beast some fatal damage.
Furman's sword was still raised over his head when the lion's lunge turned into a full-body barge that lifted Furman off his feet. That was all the lion needed to start dealing his damage. Heavy paw after heavy paw connected with Furman's body on the ground as the lion swiped at him over and over again.
Each paw that landed on Furman's body felt like a ton of bricks had been dropped on him. Three paw swipes later, Furman's vision started going blurry and the giant claw marks had left a bloody trail on his body.
"H-he...lp me!" Furman pleaded in a croaky voice that carried across to Ovi who watched the massacre in silent horror.
"What is that fool doing there on his ass? Help him you coward!" General Khiduf ordered loudly along with the crowd.
The beast, after weakening his prey to perfection decided to end the hunt. With a growl, it clamped its gigantic jaws around the helpless Furman's throat and shook the helpless fighter like a rag doll.
"Oh, shit" Ovi exclaimed when he saw Furman in that position. He knew the fighter was as good as dead under those powerful jaws and the blood gushing out from between the beast's maw proved it.
Furman struggled weakly under the weight of the lion who kept shaking the life out of him, and the crowd booed as they saw Ovi pick himself from the ground and abandon his previous opponent.
With a last growl of victory, the lion tore Furman's throat out in a shower of blood and the crowd groaned their frustration at his demise as he gave a last shudder that ended with glazed eyes which had no life in them.
"Get me out of here! Please!" Ovi shouted and the angry crowd booed even louder.
SPLAT!!!
A tomato landed at the back of Ovi's head.
"Screw you!, You cost me 20 silver coins, you coward!"
Someone from the crowd yelled and another item came flying at Ovi who dodged it. Soon, he was getting pelted from all angles and the crowd was getting nastier and nastier with their choice of words in his description.
The beast, still digging into its first course ignored all the noise coming from the crowd. It probably would have continued ignoring everyone until it was done with Furman's body if one of the many items being thrown at Ovi hadn't disturbed its meal.
The beast roared its displeasure as it lifted its head from its food. That was when it saw its second meal. With a roar, it dashed at its last prey.
Ovi turned just in time to see the beast approaching him. He cried out in fear and tried to scale the smooth walls which he failed spectacularly at.
Aaaaaaargh!!!
Ovi's screams echoed all over the colosseum and the crowd cheered as the king of the beasts tore into its last victim.
