"Look whose here! Yanna you've grown now. Wow how the days passed"
She smiled back. "Hello Mang Celo, yes I think I've grown but I'm still the little Yanni you used to play" She hugged the old man.
"Your Abuelo is upstairs, Karina called earlier informing about your arrival. Your Grandpa was so delighted to hear it, and despite his condition, he called the best cook in town to prepare a banquet"
"A banquet!?, don't you think Abuelo is overreacting? I am here to visit him and take good care of him! Not have my birthday celebrated!" she joked
The old man chuckled. "Indeed it is not your birthday but I cannot blame the old man, the last time you've been here was 7 years ago, you've been so busy you forgot to visit us you know."
She hinted a little accusation and hurt in the man's voice.
"I apologized Mang Celo I didn't mean it, it's just that life in the City is so busy you couldn't even notice you've spent 10 years already." she smiled. "But I'm here now, I'll make it all up to you guys."
The man's face brightened.
"Despite the years, you're still the little Yanni we used to love indeed. Alright, your Abuelo is surely excited to meet you.
They went inside and when she saw the old rocking chair, she knew her Abuelo was sitting there. It was his Abuelos favorite. He would always say that it was a special racking chair compared to others. Because it was a Victorian chair. And his good friend gave it to him as a gift. The chair alone would provide them a fortune in 2 lifetimes. Of course, they would only smile at that, going along with his Abuelo's stories.
Because where can you see a rocking chair that would cost so much of a fortune.
She slowly walked toward him and called him. "Abuelo"
The old man turned his head and stared at her for a while maybe trying to recognize the face in front of him.
Until a slow smile formed of recognition.
"Yanna!!! Come here love, how have you been?" she hugged his grandfather and after that, he started crying
"Grappy what's wrong?"
He wiped his tears "It's just that I've missed you so much. After you left, this house became quiet. Your mother told me she'll be following in a week, but that's still a long way"
She smiled a little "Oh Grappy I'm sorry. I promised I'll make it up to you. We'll be going places and strolling and shopping and even doing gardening. I miss Abuela's garden of Eden"
"Yes I miss it too and I miss your Abuela, -for awhile he became quiet- fine we'll visit the best places we used to go. But for now, go and have something to eat, I made them cook your favorite. You must be very hungry."
"Woah now that you've mentioned I feel a little hungry indeed. Come to Grappy let's eat together. And you too Mang Celo join me in this small banquet"
They were sitting at the dining table and were talking about each other's experiences for the past years. She told his grandfather how his life was in City and he was laughing and listening with great attention that Yanni thought how he miss his Abuelo.
After they ravage the food on the table, Yanni did the dishes while the old men sat outside and were in a little chit-chat. Mang Celo insists to wash the dishes but she refused. When she was almost done his Abuelo called him to stop washing the dishes and it can wait. She smiled, his Abuelo never changed, he used to bring her in his getaways and would always find her in the kitchen and would stop her from finishing the dishes so they can move along. She dry her hands and followed them on the terrace.
His abuse was drinking tea that was made by Mang Celo, the latter have one for himself too.
"Would you like some tea, Yanna?, wait and I'll make one too" when Mang Celo was about to stand from his chair she stopped him.
"No, I'm fine with this Mang Celo, " showing her lemonade and then giving a sweet smile to the old man.
Mang Celo sat back again and started drinking his tea. His grandfather asked how was her work, but as she was about to answer the old man. The telephone rang from the living room.
Sheggestureddde to the old man that she will get it.
And as she answered the phone.
The person on the other line spoke "Alvaro, this is Gerard" there was urgency in his voice but also strain as if it was hard for him to speak. "This is important-" before the man continues what he was about to say, Yanna decided to speak. "This is Yanna, speaking, hold on for a second Mister and I'll hand over the phone to Abuelo" she waited for his response, and when she was about to pull it from her ear the man spoke. "Yanna... I would love to meet you " and to her mind, she thought she saw the man smiling on the other line.
She went ahead and gave the phone to his Abuelo. And as the two men were speaking on the line. The facial reaction of his grandfather has changed into a lot of emotions. From delight to being upset to worry and was it sadness?
She frowned. Who was that man? He sounded a little sick and old and foreign. "It must be his friend"
After the call ended. His abuelo looked as if forgetting her and Mang Celo's existence. When he looks like that she knew he was thinking something deep. She slowly kneel in her Abuelo's side and asked him gently what was the call about. That's when the old man seemed to be pulled out from his reverie and realized he has companions.
The old man started looking at Yanna intently. Undecided of what happened to the call, she embraced his Abuelo.
"Abuelo, you look so down and that's not good for your health."
His abuelo slowly pushed her away and looked at her again, that look where she always remembered from her childhood. As an only child, she was a princess in both her grandparents.
"Yanna it seemed that I need to fulfill a promise to an old friend." he looked at her and sadness mirrored from his eyes. "A dying one"
"Is there anything I can help with?"
"Do you want to help me fulfill that promise?" his Abuelo a little worried.
She wants that, of course.
"Sure I will Abuelo,"
She said to assure him.
"My old friend is now dying, and he has a grandson"
She urges him to continue.
"Yanna You will be marrying his son"
Yanna was awestruck by what she heard, Or maybe she didn't hear it right. Better ask again.
"Come again Abuelo I seemed to missed that"
"Yanna you will be marrying my friend's grandson." a shy and confused answer.
"You can't be serious Abuelo, why would I do that?"
His abuelo sighed. "This was not supposed to be like this. That promise we made was only for "in any case" situations. However, it happened"
Yanna couldn't seem to take the whole thing in. His grandpa was speaking as if the old man was only talking to himself, rather than to her.
He then looked at her and took her hand. "You are my only granddaughter and I love you so much it is hard for me as well- he paused. - but a wish from a dying friend is hard to resist as well, most especially that I owe him my life."
Yanna this will be a long story, but this will help you understand why we need to do this.
