Chapitre 13: Genin Work Sucks
" Why don't you believe me? Ninja work sucks" I said with my mouth fool of ramen, after receiving my first payment, I decided to treat Naruto to the legendary Ichiraku's Ramen.
"You're always trying to fool me, this could be one of those times" He replied.
"Fair, but this time I'm being honest, my Team's mission was to chop wood, it was that or rescue some old lady's cat, and you know I'm allergic to cats" Annoyed by the fact of wasting my abilities on that, but this is how the economy works in this place, we save cats, we chop wood, we pick up clothes from the laundry and do errands, in justification most Ninjas remain as Genins and since this world doesn't seem to know anything about taxes, the Village get public funds by taking commissions for the work ninjas do, true some of these things could be done by anyone, but the economy depends on ninjas, they give menial task to us, and we spend our money in their business.
"At least you are making money, I still depend on the pension the Hokage gives me, and it's barely enough to make it to the end of the week" He said gulping the last bit of Ramen, after a bit more of chatting, I asked for the check, and left the place with Naruto, we said our goodbyes and I went to sleep.
I spent a week doing more of the same, chop wood, find a dog, buy medicines for an old couple, deliver a letter, catch a theft of jewelry that turned out to be a crow, and the worst of all security guard for a children's party, it wasn't even a VIP child, it was just a wealthy couple that wanted to impress their friends by showing they had enough money to hire Shinobi, I was a glorified bouncer.
"I'll do any kind of errand mission, Lee should take the wood chopping, and Neji you are great finding lost pets with that vision of yours, let's hurry and meet here in one hour" I said, by now we were a well-oiled machine of menial tasks, we knew each other's strengths and weakness, between boring missions, and daily training sessions with Guy-Sensei, our teamwork developed quickly.
"Actually Kenji, we have a special mission for Team three" Mizuki said, it turns out she was promoted from her teaching position to an administrative in the Academy, she was in charge of D and C ranks missions, "So do you still want the D-rank Package or should I explain the C-rank mission?" she added.
"Let me hear the details first" Guy-Sensei intervened, before the three of us were able to answer.
"We have reports from multiple sources there is a group of bandits, assaulting merchants and travelers, it should take you a full day of travel to arrive to the destination, according to victims there isn't a single Shinobi with them, but I will advise caution, sometimes they say that to lower the rank and payment of the mission, your mission consist on finding the bandit's base, gather information and return to report, but if your Leader thinks you can handle it, then you can engage" She explained.
"The second part consist on capture?" I asked, she wasn't clear about that, I don't want a mistake on my first C-rank mission.
"Currently, there isn't a bounty to capture them, emitted by any Village, your Leader has the last word on that matter" she replied, now I understand, the second part of the mission wasn't about handling their numbers, but to see if we were ready to take a life.
"Team three will accept the mission" Guy-Sensei said, he took the scroll on his hand and putted inside one of his vest pockets, he turned to face us "you have thirty minutes to handle anything you need, I will get rations for the four of us, if you need other supplies, I recommend you go and buy them while you can, once we are on the road, we won't stop for anything" he said, with the serious tone he rarely used.
I nodded and took my leave towards home, I explained to my mother that I had to leave for a couple of days to do a mission, went to the Tool Store near Ichiraku's Restaurant and bought thirty senbons, five kunais, a sleeping bag, a first aid kit, and one paper bomb just in case I required it, there wasn't a store that could compare to this one, they had a big supply and excellent quality, no wonder why most Clans bought their tools or commissioned special weapons here.
"Kenji, before you leave I have something that you could be interested, let me look for it" the attendant said, he went to the back and after a couple of minutes he returned with a black jacket, (the one from the auxiliary chapter) he handed it over to me "this is the first working model of my last prototype, is made from a new material, light as your clothes and capable of rendering regular weapons useless" he activated his salesman talk jutsu, I put the jacket on, it was a new material for him, but I knew what he was talking about, Carbon Nanotubes, I grabbed one of the kunais, and tried slicing, stabbing, but there was no damage, I felt the pressure, but no cuts or bleeding, It can help to avoid a fatal wound, but isn't omnipotent, I could be hurt by bludgeoning weapons, Ninjutsu or someone strong enough to break my bones, which was pretty common, but at least I didn't have to worry about sneak attacks with Ninja Tools that didn't conduct Chakra.
"How much for them?" I narrowed my eyes, preparing myself to bargain.
"A hundred thousand ryo, is the price that I'll ask normally for such an armor, is made of a special alloy and a new material in the market, but since is the first model, and you are one of my dear loyal customers since you joined the academy, I'm willing to part with it for half the price" he replied, that was all my savings, but this was a prototype and weapons made with Chakra conducting alloy are rare to find.
"I'll give you thirty" cutting him before he tried to sweet talk me into spending all my money.
"That barely covers the materials and work time, forty-five" he countered, I was about to reject him when he said "I will add a pair of gloves, if you give five minutes I can put your plaques on them, for free "
"Sold" I said, handing the money, this man really knows how to make business.
"Is always a pleasure doing business with you, please come again" He put his best-selling smile.
When I was finish, I made my way towards the Village entrance, Guy-Sensei was already there waiting, Rock Lee and Neji arrived five minutes later, and with the Team three reunited, we were ready to start our first real mission.
