Self-defense. Vincent knew then. That Maya's father's death had been no drunken accident the way everyone else thought it was. He had figured it out by reading a few reports. 

Antonio Ramirez was a horribly abusive man. He was an alcoholic that beat anything that moved when he was drunk. His favorite punching bag was his daughter from a tender age. Maribel Ramirez loved him too much to stop him. She blamed Maya's injuries on her rather than him. 

"Well, if you would just be quiet, he wouldn't notice you."

"You knew he was in a bad mood today because of work and still bothered him."

"You shouldn't provoke him, Maya. If you stay out of his way, he'll have no reason to be mad."
