Third Month.
Exam—short term for examination—is a test of one's ability or knowledge. Every students are very familiar with this term; it is an anticipated occasion for every students, without exception.
While the reason maybe different for each student, it is an undeniable fact their hearts always pound whenever they hear it.
The exam itself is not really a scary occasion; what really haunts every student's mind is the result of their exam.
If the result is good, it will be a relieving occasion. However, if the result is bad, they can only bite their handkerchief and watch their friends in envy.
Depending on how bad their grade is, they will have to sacrifice, at least, a week of their summer vacation to take Summer Class. It is aimed to cover for the subjects they failed in their midterm exam.
Needless to say, there are definitely students who treat exam day just like any normal day. Such students are the academically gifted students and the Second Young Generation who only need to ride on their father's coattails to succeed in life.
Of course, generalization doesn't work on some people: these people are an exception. Such in our favorite hypocrite, Hachiman's case, he doesn't even realize he has done an exam, until he sees the result announcement.
"Heh... My score is not bad. I wonder why I got 95 in my girl's subject though." Hachiman slightly frowns. His Modern Japanese is the only subject he doesn't get a full score in.
Soon enough, a realization dawned upon him. "I see. It must be because of the essay. Shizuka must've not agreed with the idea of my essay." Hachiman shakes his head slightly. "It seems I need to educate her better."
In case you are wondering what he wrote in his essay, it was about his argument on why human is the dumbest species on earth, complete with the scientific proof which only god knows where he got it from.
In his essay, he concluded T-Virus is way smarter than human. The essay was honestly informative and creative. However, the amount of insult he sent toward humanity was also mind-boggling.
Because of this reason, Shizuka deducted his score.
"Are you not satisfied with your score?"
At the voice, Hachiman turns his head to the side. The speaker is none other than Yukino.
Immediately, Hachiman turns his head back to the result announcement. "Not really. I was just thinking about where I made a mistake."
"Does that really matter though?" Yukino asked curiously. "You are still first anyway." Then, she gracefully swipes her hair with her hand.
"No matter what the outcome, whether it affects something or not, a mistake is still a mistake. Foregoing it just because you think it doesn't matter is a an act of stupidity."
Hachiman paused, and takes a glance at Yukino from the corner of his eyes.
"Are you intelligent enough to understand that?" He asked.
Yukino frowns lightly, and opted to stay silent. Hachiman briefly smiles sardonically at her, before leaving the vicinity.
"I guess you are intelligent enough," he says while slowly disappearing from her view.
He is heading towards Shizuka's office; he still can't accept his score got deducted!
Fast forward to summer holiday, Hachiman and Shizuka enjoy their summer holiday in Moriya Beach again, as a couple this time.
Nothing really different than last year, but the change of status alone makes Shizuka's chest swell in pride. She drags Hachiman around with her as if wanting to show him off to the whole world.
Her face screams, "Behold mortals! This is my man!" to anyone who sees her.
"Hachiman, let's play beach volleyball!"
"Hm? You want to play that again?"
Just a quick information: upon arriving here, Shizuka immediately asked Hachiman to play beach volleyball with some random couples. Due to how weak they were, they got completely crushed by the athletic couple—Hachiman and Shizuka.
"Yes." Shizuka turns to Hachiman, then quirks her eyebrow. "Do you mind that?"
"No. But, I believe you have ruined other people's summer holiday enough." Hachiman puts his hand on Shizuka's head. "So, let them enjoy their holiday for awhile, okay?"
"Tsk. Can't be helped, then."
She is slightly disappointed she can't show how good of a duo Hachiman and her is anymore. However, upon realizing that she can still show Hachiman off without crushing another couple, she is quick to recover.
They spend the day swimming, and floating aimlessly on the offshore; before returning to the inn to rest, and enjoy the delicacies the inn provides them.
"Just a year ago, you were here sulking because I accidentally made you wet in public. Time surely flies, huh?" Hachiman reminisced.
Shizuka blinks her eyes once, then stops eating. She looks at Hachiman with unamused eyes, before asking, "Of all the memories we have in this place, you have to bring THAT up?"
Hachiman smirks faintly. "I can bring the other memories up, but you won't like it."
Shizuka frowns. She is trying to recall which memory Hachiman is referring to.
"This memory is so worth remembering, I even named it. I call this memory 'Morning Wood.' It is—"
"Alright, stop! I get it! No need to bring that up!" Shizuka's face flushed.
Hachiman chuckles slightly, before saying, "I can't believe you are still embarrassed about it, despite doing it every morning now."
"W—W—Well, it's different!" Shizuka's face flushed even brighter. "An embarrassing first time will always be embarrassing!"
Hachiman shakes his head in amusement. "I sometimes can't understand the way you think." He smiles, then continues, "But, you are honest with yourself. That's what makes you different and special; that's why I love you."
"D—Damn, corny brat..." Shizuka shyly looks at Hachiman. "You really know how to talk, don't you?" Hachiman merely shrugs lightly with a smile.
Three days passed, and the couple's private summer holiday ends; the time to spend the summer holiday with Hachiman's family has come. This way, the bond between Shizuka and Hachiman's family became even stronger.
It is only when the summer holiday ends, does Hachiman realize he hasn't met Shizuka's family yet.
...
Fifth Month.
After a full month of summer holiday, school starts once again. Hachiman spends his school day like usual, which means he spends it either with Shizuka or Saki—sometimes both.
Since he has to either attend basketball club or go to the gym, his chance to spend his time with Shizuka at school is only at lunch break.
They will talk while eating their lunch—which Hachiman has made—and sometimes joke around, just like usual.
Hachiman will ask Saki to join them from time to time, as he believes she must be tired of dealing with Yui's incessant talk. Yes, Saki and Yui somehow became a good friend right after knowing each other.
Whenever the three of them eat together, Shizuka always praises Saki's demeanor and nags Hachiman to treat people as polite as how Saki treats people. Of course, Hachiman always righteously declares he is fine with himself.
He always quotes: "Be thyself, other's art taken!"
Today however, Saki can't eat with Hachiman and Shizuka. Yui decided to eat with Saki rather than with her clique this time.
"Yukino complaints about you again, Hachiman."
Hachiman quirks his eyebrow. "What do you mean?"
"She is frustrated you always give her a cold shoulder. She just wants to interact with you as a fellow intellectual, as she likes to say."
Hachiman stops eating, then silently looks at Shizuka. Aside from him, Yukino is the other person who spends her time with Shizuka at lunch break from to time.
Everytime she eats with Shizuka, Hachiman always avoids her by eating with Saki in the rooftop with another Saki—the delinquent Saki.
"One of the basic human rights is to be able to freely choose who we interact with. I don't feel the need to interact with her, so why should I mind her?"
Shizuka sighs. "Huuh... Can't you be a little bit like Saki? She knows how to refuse people without irritating them in the slightest."
"I have refused her idea to interact with me many times, dear; she didn't listen."
"At this rate, you will end up without a friend." Shizuka shakes her head helplessly.
Hachiman smirks. "Why should I yearn for temporary friends, when I already have a lifetime soulmate?"
Shizuka's cheek reddened, and it takes her a quite some time to recover. "Kuhum! Beware of your sweet mouth. You might slip one day, and say it to someone else." Shizuka smiles "graciously."
"When that time comes, you can say goodbye to little Hachiman."
"Woah... I am speechless." Hachiman is amazed Shizuka can say such a gruesome thing while keeping that smile. He is touched, his influence has finally gotten on her. "I think I fell for you again, Shizuka."
Hachiman stands from his chair, puts his hands on Shizuka's table, then leans his body forward.
"Give me a kiss."
"Hell, no! It's school what do you—"
Shizuka couldn't finish her words in the end; Hachiman has immediately taken the initiative, and gives her a kiss. It is just a casual kiss on the lips, but it managed to fluster Shizuka. Still, as it has already happened, she doesn't complain.
"L—Let's do it one more time." She even asks Hachiman to do it again.
Hachiman smirks. "But, it's school!"
"S—Shut up! Just tell me if you don't—"
Hachiman once again stopped her with his kiss. Shizuka is irked, but she soon melts in his kiss and enjoys it fully. Of course, they are professional enough to not get carried away.
Even though they are in Shizuka's private office, like she says, they are still at school. They can just resume it at home. They are not dogs in heat, after all!
