Mitsu's eyelashes twitched as he slowly opened his eyes, squinting in an attempt to sharpen the blurred images before him. He looked at the blue and white color schemed ceiling. He shut his eyes again, trying to remember what exactly happened.
Then it all hits him with a bang. The memory of it all occupied his thoughts. He and Aoi constantly fought several chunin and genins. They were in exhaustion and as a last resort, he used the secret genjutsu of his clan to cloak their presence.
Feeling a sudden breeze caressing his cheeks, his head instinctively moved but what accompanied it was pain. The pain shot up from his head to his whole body like fire. He cringed. It exploded in his head with blinding whiteness.
It made him dizzy. It made him reel. The pain was like needles that had been dipped in alcohol had been jammed through his skin, like his neck had been replaced with ice and electricity wired straight into his spine.
And just when the pain was at its worst, it dissipated, like fog off some terrible lake.
Hearing a movement from behind, Sora turned his head and quickly rushed to Mitsu seeing him awake.
Seeing the familiar white-haired boy, His words broke up and all he could say were stuttering sounds. Hot tears streamed down his face, and he squeezed his eyelids shut in the hope his tears would stop. His choppy breathing and watery eyes remained for quite some time, and he sat there unmoving.
He was alive. He survived. He wanted to smile but felt a chill so he refrained. But, He was genuinely happy to be alive.
The feeling of death was suffocating on the battlefield. It was too much pressure to bear.
Looking at the tear-faced Mitsu, Sora hurriedly took out a white handkerchief and clear the tears.
"I survived. I survived. I survived. The battlefield made me have little to no hope of surviving. But I am still alive."
Listening to the true heartfelt voice of Mitsu, a needle poked through his heart, the guilt tied his stomach into a knot.
He had a scratchy throat. He couldn't find the words to convey.
Mitsu also noticed the silence of his friend. He looked down. A white bandage covered parts of his body. His eyebrows lowered and pulled closer together as he revealed a sad smile.
These were the side effect of using the secret jutsu forcefully but he did not regret it. But looking at the frowning eyebrows of his friend, he knew that the white-haired friend blamed himself.
Sora was a very gentle person regarding his friends in his opinion. He was polite to others even if he had the capital to be haughty and arrogant. Courteousness is the consideration for others and politeness is the method to deliver such considerations.
On the evening glow, Mitsu opened his lips slightly and said, "You know, In every few generations, a member will be born with an incredible talent for genjutsu. The clan member's prowess in that field is so absolute that even without proper training, their genjutsu is simply overwhelming."
Sora turned his attention to the low voice of Mitsu which echoed in the silent room as if a fairy tale being weaved in the void.
"Furthermore, the genjutsu is so powerful that it causes the brain to believe anything that happens to the victim to the point where the genjutsu physically harms the victim's body in the same manner they envisioned. This fearsome ability allows the clan member to potentially kill their opponents with genjutsu."
After saying this, his eyes glazed over as he seemed to see his past self.
"I am the last member of this generation of the Kurama clan. From the day I was born I was favored by the whole clan. I slept in the main mansion and lived a very good life. I was the jewel of the clan. Every one of my needs was catered to."
He recalled the happy smile of his relatives when he was born. He recalled how panicked his caretaker was when he was even slightly injured. How others quickly left their work hearing about his slight injury.
"Eventually, I learned of the unique talent I seemed to have possessed from the clan leader. Learning that I might have possessed this talent made me feel unique and gave me a lofty ideal like being the greatest ninja."
Mitsu smiled remembering those naive days as Sora listened quietly. The evening light lightened the whole room in a soft yellow glow.
"But everything changed when I did not show the signature monster talent. The hope of the clan to reach the former glory also disappeared the same day. Other clan members gradually distanced themselves from me. I changed from the sun-like existence who can brighten everyone's day to a dark cloud that shields the sun."
He can still remember the darkened eyes of his clan when they learned that I did not have that talent. He was naive and thought that even if he did not have the talent he would still be loved as before but he was like a fool trying to grasp clouds not understanding anything.
"The sudden change in the attitude of others made me disillusioned. I hoped so much that it was all a dream. After I grew up, I realized the change was due to my talent."
Sitting in the chain near the white bed, Sora listened to Mitsu.
"From that day on, I trained genjutsu as if my life depended on it. I still remember it was the day of the New Year when I finally practiced an illusion technique. My chakra was exhausted, my clothes were full of dirt from the clothing, my body was weary but I was happy."
"I had finally managed to release a genjutsu. I took my weary body with bright eyes to the house wanting others to listen to the good news. But what awaited me was just cold eyes, no expected praise. My broken heart constantly screamed
Why?
Why? Why?
I was confused for a long time. I hated being a ninja and wanted to quit."
Humans are such selfish creatures. Only when needed will they pay attention to you if not there will not be even a single thought to discard someone.
"Later, I heard of the genius defeating seniors in the academy. Honestly, I was jealous of you. I was never able to get out of the shadow of the cold eyes of my clan. I wanted acceptance and warmth and envied your talent."
Speaking of his jealousy honestly made Mitsu feel his stuffy heart relax.
"Later, As fate likes to trick people, you became my teammate. I tried to hate you but you made it damn hard for me. I thought we would be a bad team but the time I have spent with you and others were the best years of my life."
Listening to such confession of Mitsu, Sora was also silent.
It all made sense now. Why he had got angry at Aoi for calling him talentless. Such past treatment made Mitsu insecure.
"When you invited me to eat together, I was happy. I felt the warmth for the first time in years when eating the bowl of ramen. The hot broth and the noodles lit my world. Afterward, the ramen shop owner told me about you and I decided to become your friend. Possibly the best decision I have ever made."
(A/N: Ramen is the solution for all the problems in Narutoverse.)
Listening to Mitsu, Sora also showed a gentle smile. He was afraid of bonds but such invisible bonds wrapped around him. But seeing how such bonds can help others, Sora was grateful to not sever the bonds with others and go down another path.
Mitsu also gently smiled and said, "So, Don't feel guilty. I wanted to quit being a ninja long ago but the clan had already invested resources in me. I was forbidden to do so. So, from now on I can live a life with my wishes. The life of constant conflict and war is not for me."
Even if it was just comfort, the guilt in Sora's heart had reduced a little. He still wanted to fully heal his friend. His face became serious as he thought about the plans.
Looking at his friend, Mitsu muttered in his heart.
In the hollow world, I saw the light when I met you. You are the gift of the world to me. Having someone like you as a friend is the best thing that has ever happened to me.
