“Please, I can handle that. Every night that Da read me a bedtime story he told me that the moral was that men are pigs, and that sometimes you just have to let them know that you’re a farmer with an ax. It’s a rule I live by.”

“Great,” Howard said, and then nodded to Jason. “I’m glad I didn’t know about that. I appreciate it now. Perhaps I wouldn’t have when she was little.”

“Just doing my job,” Jason said, stretching in his seat, a big smile covering his face.

When they reached the house, Jason and Howard went to the kitchen to get plates and drinks while Janey and James ran to the basement.

“You kept them clean, Dad,” James said, rolling his sleeping bag out in front of the couch while Janey did the same with hers. “I don’t think we’ve used these in over five years, but they smell good.”
