Dakota finally made eye contact. There was a deep sadness there, behind his hazel eyes. At once, Ken wasn’t sure she really wanted to know. If the mystery illness turned out to be terminal, Kenna didn’t think she could handle it. Not now. Not after moving heaven and earth to get him back alive.

Clenching his jaw, “I—I have M.S., Ken. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you back when I got diagnosed. I take pills for it, and shots. I’m shaking because my body is driving my nervous system up a wall. It’s not from anything else. And the ones you’re talking about, the green pills you found, they’re not for anxiety. I’m not anxious. I never have been. I guess the medicine is used for that, too, but it’s a sedative. It takes the trembling away for a while. If I take everything when I’m supposed to, it’s hard to tell I’m even sick.”

“But you didn’t have your meds when they took you…” she surmised.

“No, I didn’t.”
