The waiting was the worst part. She’d accepted her death. In many ways she looked forward to being with Mom and Dad and her brother Ben…and Michael again. She firmly believed that they’d be waiting for her, wherever it was she was going. Hadn’t Grandma Chris always believed that? Cam just wanted to get there, get this over with!

There was a key in the lock. As Cam expected, a guard entered with shackles to secure her hands to a chain around her waist. She calmly let him fasten the cuffs around her wrists. Then, instead of leading her outside to face her death sentence, he left.

To her surprise, in walked Juan Carlos Ortega, El Presidente.

“It is all right.” Juan Carlos turned to the guard that accompanied him. “I wish a few moments to speak with her in private.” When the guard looked like he would object, Juan Carlos held his hand up. “She is handcuffed. She cannot harm me. Leave us,” he said.

With a slight bow and salute, the guards left them.
