“Don’t worry. I’m about to cry hard too,” Carlos said, looking through the open window.
Beto turned to face him, teary eyes and all. “Well, I guess this is see you soon. Take care of yourself—and Eugenio. You guys are perfect together.”
“Take care of yourself too. Be safe on the road.”
“Hey, I’ve been driving longer than you.”
“Okay, no advice. Maybe one piece: just don’t pick up any hitchhikers along the way. Even if they are hot.”
“No promises.”
“Well, I better move away from the window or else I’ll never get rid of you.”
“Wait, just one more thing.” Beto reached over to one of the bags and pulled out a locket. It was the one Elena always wore. “This was Mami’s. I was going to keep it, but I think you might treasure it more. Open it.”
Carlos did and almost dropped it when he saw the pictures inside. He reached in and gave Beto a final hug. “Go before I decide I won’t miss you anymore.”
