Carlos sat down a couple of rows away from the coffin, unsure if he could go up there. He was already crying, but he knew he would lose it more the moment he walked up to see his mother. “Why didn’t I try?” He thought to himself again. He had been torturing himself with those thoughts all day. He was so focused on the coffin right now that he didn’t hear the door open, or sense that someone was walking up towards.

The person moved to the row behind him and placed their hands on Carlos’s shoulder, nearly scaring him out of his skin. He jumped and nearly knocked the chair back into the person behind him. Carlos clutched his chest and turned around to find Eugenio staring back at him, his big eyes showing remorse.

“I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you. You just looked like you needed someone.”

Carlos was breathing heavily, and he managed to get a few words out.

“I just…didn’t…expect you.”

“Beto sent me to talk with the funeral director about something.”
