He never imagined Wayne would ever do that and he couldn’t answer Wayne’s question. Not now, right there when his anger made his voice quiver, when his hands shook.

After Wayne brushed past him, hitting his shoulder on the way out like he couldn’t wait to leave, Pad stood there for a second, then sat on the edge of the bed, and put his head in his hands.

“Shit!” he said to himself. He heard heavy footsteps up the stairs and turned, expected to see Wayne but instead Jack appeared, almost out of breath.

“David’s been trying to call you. Is your cell phone dead or something?”

“No. Why?”

“We need to go to the hospital. Your aunt fainted and hit her head at the rally downtown.”19
