“Happy to do it,” Dan replied, feeling a warmth spread through him and settle in his groin. “Sorry I’m so late. That’s the way it goes sometimes in this business. Unexpected things come up.”

“No worries.”

As Dan began to remove piece after piece of equipment needed for doing the job of floating the horses’ teeth, Scott’s eyes widened. “Geez! It looks like an arsenal of medieval torture equipment.”

Dan laughed. “I guess it does.”

As Scott helped Dan carry the tools into the barn, he asked, “Why do they call it floating?”

“Because that rasp we use to file down the teeth is called a float. But…” Dan shook his head as he saw Scott open his mouth to speak, “don’t ask why they call a rasp a float. They never taught us that in vet school.”

They both chuckled.

When they got to the stalls, Shadow and Sugar looked up expectantly.

“Have they been fed yet?” Dan asked.

“No. Should I feed them?”

“No. It’s better if they haven’t eaten. Their mouths will be clear of food debris that way.”
