Chapter 39: Chicken or Egg

Gryffindor's first-year's second class is the History of Magic, which is undoubtedly considered the most boring class at Hogwarts by many students.

The History of Magic classroom is located on the second floor of Hogwarts Castle and the first-year students have 20 minutes of free time after the first class. However, because Albert and Professor Flitwick talked for a long time, the four roommates had no extra time to waste, so they had to speed up and rush their way to the History of Magic classroom.

When the four arrived at the History of Magic classroom, Filch had already come to open the door ahead of time. After all, Professor Binns is a ghost, so he couldn't open the door for everyone.

This time Gryffindor take the class along with Ravenclaw, and everyone sat in their seats chatting before class started.

Albert ignored the twin brothers frolicking next to him, took out the box of Bertie Bott's Bean from his pocket, picked a blue-colored bean, and threw it into his mouth. After chewing, he found out that it tasted blueberry.

"Good luck." Albert murmured. While he took out "A History of Magic" from his schoolbag, he also took out "An Anthology of Nineteenth-Century Charms". While reading the book, he flipped through his skill list.

After finishing the spell class, Albert found that he had acquired another skill: The Theory of Charm.

In Albert's memory, this basic skill was very useful, so he immediately upgraded the skill to level 1. He carefully recalled the extra knowledge of The Theory of Charm in his head and couldn't help frowning. It seemed that the effect of upgrading the skill just by one level was not that great.

His knowledge about the theory of charm has indeed improved, but Albert has a feeling that it is just that, no more. If he wants to, he can teach himself most of the knowledge he just got from upgrading the skill. That's why he got the illusion that upgrading the skill is not that useful.

While thinking about the knowledge of the Wand-Lighting Charm, Albert took another bean and threw it into his mouth, as if he was eating chocolate beans.

The next moment, he stretched out his hand to cover his mouth, and a spicy smell escaped in his mouth.

'Damn it, I just ate chili-flavored bean.' The bean was so spicy that Albert vowed that he would never eat another bean when he was in a trance in the future.

"What's wrong with you?" Fred noticed that Albert's movement was a bit strange.

"I just ate chili-flavored bean." Albert pointed to the small box on the table. It was The Bertie Bott's Beans that he bought on the train last time and have not been eaten yet.

"A risk at every mouthful." Fred smiled gleefully, not forgetting to mention the slogan of The Bertie Bott's Beans to tease Albert.

Albert stared at the gleeful guy fiercely, took out a toffee from his pocket, and stuffed it into his mouth to relieve the spiciness, then he handed the beans to Fred.

"You need to be very careful when you eat Bertie Bott's Beans." Fred pinched one bean and threw it into his mouth. "It tastes like spinach."

"Mine is strawberry flavor." George announced happily.

"I eat these beans every..." Lee also came over, picked one, and threw it in his mouth.

"I got Bertie Bott's Beans, anybody wants it?" Albert asked, shaking the box toward the others.

As soon as the voice fell, he heard Lee's voice.

"It tasted like rotten eggs. So disgusting." His cheeks were twisted out, and he spat out the beans he just chewed onto the ground.

A Ravenclaw girl near the cast a disgusted look toward Lee.

Feeling the other's eyes, Lee's face was a little red, and he scratched his head embarrassedly.

"Scourgify ." Albert raised his wand, pointed at the bean that Lee vomited, and threw a fruit candy at him.

"I will never eat Bertie Bott's Beans ever again." Lee swears.

"You have said this more than once." George joked. "There is one time that he ate a bean which tasted like marmalade."

After Lee's incident, everyone who approached Albert's small box of Bertie Bott's Beans stopped, no one want to eat anything strange.

"What kind of spell did you use just now?" the Ravenclaw's girl near him introduced herself: "My name is Katrina McDougal."

"Hello Katrina, I'm Albert Anderson." Albert put another piece of toffee into his mouth making the spiciness in his mouth gradually faded as he chewed. "It was a Scouring Charm just now, a very practical spell."

"Most freshmen won't be as good at magic as you, even if their family members teach them in advance. Also..." Katrina glanced at the "An Anthology of Nineteenth-Century Charms" on Albert's hands, and said, "I dare say that the Sorting Hat must have assigned you to the wrong House."

"There is nothing wrong with Gryffindor." Albert didn't pay too much attention to what she said. "Also... I'm from a Muggle family."

"It's impossible. Only families of wizards will teach magical knowledge in advance." The expression on Katrina's face showed how surprised she was.

"I heard... that if someone want to enter Ravenclaw common room they need to answer a question..." Albert changed the subject stiffly. He didn't want to argue about his pedigree.

"Yes, everyone need to answer a question from the eagle-shaped bronze door knocker before they are allowed to enter the Ravenclaw common room. "Katrina looked at Albert with suspicious and asked, "However, I'm curious, how did you know this?" Many students don't know how to enter the common room of other Houses.

"Occasionally I heard a Ravenclaw student complain that he couldn't answer the question, and was left outside the common room and so on." Albert said some nonsense.

"Oh, is that so?" Katrina was still have some suspicion on Albert. After all, the chance of encountering such a thing is small.

"Why do I have a feelings that Albert can talk a few words with anyone he met." George sitting next to him murmured.

Fred and Lee nodded repeatedly, agreeing with George. While nodding, Lee reached out and took out a bean from the box. This guy actually likes Bertie Bott's Bean very much.

Albert glared at the three of them, then coughed and asked, "Can you tell me some interesting questions you have encountered?"

"Phoenix or Fire, which one comes first?." Katrina picked a question that she happened to know the answer to.

"What do you guys think?" Albert turned his head and looked at the twin brothers.

"I think it should be the Phoenix first?" Fred said with some uncertainty in his tone.

"I think so too" George agreed immediately.

"Why?" Lee asked puzzledly.

"Of course I guessed it!" the twins said in unison, and their deadpan expression amused everyone.

Albert couldn't help but laugh.

"What about you?" Katrina asked again.

"In the world of Muggles, there is a similar question." Albert did not answer her directly, and continued: "Did the chicken or the egg come first?"

"What's the answer?" Katrina asked curiously. She felt that she had guessed the answer.

"The chicken comes first." Albert replied, the answer was really different from what Katrina thought.

"Why?"

Albert explained: "How can an egg appear in the world for no reason?"

Katrina shook her head and said, "This reason is not good enough." (T/N: Yeah, you should said "the chicken come first, because I said so" while smiling cheekily. Honestly, this is just a trick question, with both answer is correct if you got a good enough reason for it to be correct.)
