I knew him well enough to know that he was thinking furiously, trying to glean any clue of hidden meaning in the words I had recited, so I gave him some time to ponder in silence before asking that weighed heavily on my mind. “Dada, what happened to Bao Hu?”

His face tensed, and his posture became even more rigid. It was evident that he was restraining himself from using profanity and expressing his anger in my presence.
