Chapitre 5: Race to the Edge
About 4 years had passed since I left Berk and things have certainly changed. Now instead of a nice island with hills and trees I live on a frozen wasteland. Not to mention the nearly invisible dragons, I dont have a name for em but they're all white and seem to find ya anywhere. They also seem to have none or few weaknesses. To deal with them I actually took a page from Hiccups book and decided to befriend a dragon myself. Poor Bugger was hurt so I helped him and it just clicked after that. He's a larger dragon the color of the very ice he breathes adorning most his body. I call him Bifrost (Its a Valkhana). I also decided to live higher up on the island to avoid them all together. Today though that isnt an option, I had plenty of food in our cave but that apparently drew the attention of something that came and ate it all.
Flying down to the lower section of the island I get Bifrost to swoop down grab a yak and fly back up as quickly as possible, the dragons hear are much easier to fight when they cant blend with the snow. We decide to fly around a bit before heading home once we notice nothing from below followed us. Its always a nice feeling, gliding through the air that is. It's really a shame I cant feel the wind on my face though on account of the wood mask I wear, it has glass lenses fitted into the small slits for my eyes. I started wearing it because of the frequent blizzards that come seemingly always. I also started dressing with fur that now lined my leather armor and also made up a hood, it got cold here especially at night so the extra warmth became a necessity.
As I'm flying back I have to keep an eye out, although it's not common there's a group of dragons that occasionally come to the summit of the mountain. Even though Bifrost can take them itll end bad if they surprise us. Coming down I notice something however a group sitting just down a small hill from my cave home. 4 dragons and 6 people. I ignore them and fly up to my cave, rarely you see people here but they do show up occasionally. Normally they're here for a dragon to capture so I tend to leave them be to avoid a conflict. I keep an eye on them from above however, my dragons colors making it slightly less visible and the raging winds blocking the sound of wing beats. They eventually encounter one of the local dragons hidden deep within a storm, a blizzard of massive proportions and are failing to best it so I decide to intervene.
Hiccup POV
I was launched into the snow by the Snowraith, peeking out I can see it in all its glory, beautiful white scales, piercing red eyes, and jagged teeth. It's only for a moment however as a new dragon easily a meter taller then the wraith swoops down clawing at it. They fight back in forth with teeth and claws before the larger one flies up, as it hovers above the ground I can see a white glow from its maw as it releases a beam of white at the now dodging Snowraith. Every spot the light touches turns to jagged masses of Ice. The Snowraith must've decided they fight wasn't worth it as it flies off. The bigger dragon soon follows but as it turns to leave I see it. Another rider staring right at me, amber eyes meeting my green. It last but a moment as the beautiful creature flies off.
After a while of hiding the storm clears up, climbing out of the snow I meet with the others and their dragons.
"It just left?" asks Fishlegs as he looks around for any signs of the creature.
Going over in my head what I say I tell the others "No. There was another dragon that fended it off, and it had a rider..."
Eivor POV
The next day came and at dawn I decided to follow our guests once more, something about that boy I saw was familiar but i can quite place it. I see them build these things? They almost look like people it's weird to be honest. Maybe it's some village custom? I find it even stranger when they light the new version of themselves on fire. I see something I never thought I would again. A Nightfury! Jumping from the cave the group hid in. It couldn't be Hiccup could it? The Nightfury and its rider fend off the aggressive dragon from in between the fires they lit, it seems he's losing and I get ready to help when suddenly an old women runs into view. Beating the dragon with a stick it starts the groups counter attack, before the beast flies off.
Hiccup POV
We had gotten the Snowraith tooth but now there was a decision to make, do we leave or do we look for the other rider. I ask the others putting it to a vote, 4-2 we look for the rider. I get everyone to split up and begin our search.
Fishlegs POV
I was only searching for a moment when I see, a beautiful dragon with a crown of frost and glistening scales like blue ice. I see the beast fly up and into a cave far above the frozen lakes below, it fit Hiccups description so I follow. Getting up takes a minute but from outside the cave I see the signs of a fire. Flying in to land on solid ground I can see him, a man with a wooden mask and a blue leather outfit decorated in brown fur.
Eivor POV
Hearing the sound of crunching snow I turn to my left away from the fire that's cooking my meal and see it! A fat boy! He looks familiar too. Fishlegs? I decide to find out "Hello there."
The hours pass as we talk and eat I even had some ale from a shipwreck we drank. I learned it was indeed Fishlegs and we talked of all kinds of things, he was very interested in Bifrost and his abilities. He was especially interested in the idea that his breath released ice rather then fire. He even asked how I ended up here. Truthfully I ship wrecked here after my escape from Berk. I still remember the water that made me freeze up nearly causing my death, land wasn't much safer at first either with only a sword to fend off the dragons. He also asked my name, I had thought he wouldn't know who I was to be honest but it makes sense without the Night Fury I wouldn't have realized it was them either. Eventually the conversation culminates in one question
"Why don't you come with is back to Berk?! you could see all the dragons! I could show you our new book on them!" happily asks the jolly giant of a teen.
Although tempting to say the least I don't want to not yet at least I've gotten fond of this island and some of the nearby ones. So with a hardy chuckle I look Fishlegs in the eyes and say "uhhh, no" He tried to persuade me but eventually left dejectedly.
Fishlegs POV
Flying back to the others I only had one thought, how do I persuade Eivor. His dragon knowledge alone is like a treasure trove, he's encountered dragons I've never even heard of like one that can sting you and paralyze even large dragons! While going over everything in my head I eventually snap out of my thoughts to Hiccup shouting my name.
"Oh, Sorry. Good news though Hiccup I found the rider! Bad news he doesn't plan to come with us... Also it's someone we know. Its Eivor..."
Astrid POV
Everything just changed I originally voted to leave and barely searched when we were told to but now I know he's here! I quickly get the location from Fishlegs before flying off in the direction of the cave. It takes me only a few minutes before I arrive with Hiccup behind me. I land and quickly storm into the cave, my excitement taking over me only to find its empty... I cant believe this he's just gone! AGAIN! I moment of and I kick the wall causing me to be covered in loose snow.
Eivor POV
After Fishlegs left I quickly grabbed my stuff and left the island, I'm just gonna go on one of my trips to any nearby islands I can find. I know the others wouldn't give up easily so I'll just leave for a few weeks and when I'm back they'll be gone simple as that. I plan to travel to an Island I've been meaning to visit for a while, I got a map from a merchant I met on one of my flights with Bifrost leading to it and it's one a few I haven't explore but it's a bit of a journey so I best make haste.
