When he woke his wrists had been freed and his arms were coursing with pins and needles.

'We haven't got all day,' an impatient voice told him.

He rolled onto his stomach and dragged his knees up. 'I'm trying.'

'Very,' said the second uniform. 'Do you need a hand?'

Wishing that he didn't David said, 'Yes,' and gasped as they grabbed him in the armpits and hauled him to his feet. He needed their support to stay upright and said so.

'Would you be good enough to follow me in, sir,' one requested of Carrington-Chalmers. 'We're going to need a statement. Constable Fels will wait for the ambulance and take the others' statements.'

Steven nodded. 'I'll go up and let them know what's happening first.'

They bundled David into the back of the police car and produced handcuffs.
