Jackie gazed down wonderingly at the flowing white dress she wore. She was outside at the lodge, and a light breeze rustled the gossamer skirt to reveal her feet, clad in battered hiking boots. Around her, people milled about, all dressed nicely in suits and formal dresses.

It must be some kind of party, she thought.

Across the clearing, she saw Scott, looking handsome in a black tuxedo, his long blond hair tucked into a knot at the back of his head. He was chatting and laughing with Trina, who for some reason was wearing a hot pink bikini.

Deciding she wanted to go to them, Jackie tried to take a step but found that her feet were stuck. Instead, she tried to call Scott, but she had no voice.

Bear looked up at her as he walked past. “You don’t lose your power. You gain his,” the dog said.

From a distance, Jackie heard a tapping sound. “Jackie? Are you awake?”

She woke with a start. Emma lay curled beside her, her face faintly flushed with fever as she slept.
