Refusing to give in to her threatening tears, Shasta kicked off her fuchsia Manolos and dug through one of her bags until she found a pair of running shoes. These she put on before she started lugging her bags up the hill and into the cabin. She piled them on the small sofa in the seating area, retrieving the last one just as the sun sank behind the mountains to the north of the lake. She glanced across the lake and saw lights flickering on inside the lodge.
I hope hes happy. Asshole!
Her stomach rumbled and she realized she hadnt eaten since the lousy chicken cordon bleu shed had on the flight from LA. But when she perused the contents kitchen cabinets, nothing appealed to her. Instead, she felt a wave of exhaustion.
Giving up on the idea of dinner, she headed into the tiny bedroom, stripped off her clothes, dropped them on the floor, and crawled into bed. She was asleep in no time.
So how did it go? Jackie asked, passing the garlic bread.
Blake took a huge bite of spaghetti. Oh, you know, she was a little underwhelmed by the accommodations.
Jackie smirked. Maybe she should have taken one of the little shacks, she murmured.
Blake frowned. What?
Oh, nothing. She turned to the kids. So are you guys ready to head to Florida tomorrow?
Both children chimed in. Yes!
Are we going to Disneyworld tomorrow? Emma asked.
No, sweetie, we will see Grandma and Grandpa tomorrow. Then after a while, well go to Disneyworld. And were staying there for a week.
Following dinner, Blake headed to his own cabin. He hadnt lived in the main lodge since hed moved away to college. Truthfully, he hadnt planned on moving back at all, but plans change. He enjoyed the privacy of his place, a small cabin at the far end of the property.
On his way, he made a slight detour to the end of the dock. If anyone had asked, hed have said he was just checking on the plane, but the truth was, he felt the need to check and see if everything was okay on the island. He was surprised that the cabin was dark.
Maybe she doesnt understand how to work the lights, he mused. Or maybe she just didnt bother. If she thinks Im going all the way out there just to turn on the lights
He turned and followed the shoreline to his own place.
Early the following morning, Blake loaded Jackie and the kids, along with all their luggage, into his old black Suburban and headed for the airport in Toronto. He glanced toward the island while he ran his final round of checks. The cabin was still dark. Of course, it was 4:30 in the morning. Still, he wondered about their new guest.
