I remove my blindfold as I step out of the boy's bathroom and into the field. Bullton has arrived and the game is about to begin. My soccer skills are not the best, but this isn't a big game either. There's not much of a crowd so I guess I don't have to worry about my performance. Still, I better show them what a sports fanatic like me can do, even to a small crowd such as this. It's not like there's anyone up there to impress. Well, maybe some of the girls. These guys in the soccer team ain't nothing compared to me, and I see some real cute girls in the stands. He he he.
...
Uh...
Good lord, she's siting in the corner by herself. Is she still a loser? Not that I knew Nola back then, but I recall seeing her at times, just being lonely and stuff. I'm so close to the bleachers and I still can't maker her out in this distance.
...
...
...
Why am am I still staring? Why am I sniffing? Ugh. Just ignore her.
*BREEEEEEEEEEET*
Oh, that's the whistle. The game is about to begin. I head on over to the field, get some last minute instructions from my coach, and get ready.
Heather pats me on the back, "Good luck."
"I don't need it," I respond.
The ball is tossed and Bullton has the ball. Look at him go, just going for the goal. Looks like they're in to win it. Nobody can catch him, so I go after him. Man, he's fast, but I just pump myself up a bit. I reach his side and he swerves around me and tosses the ball behind him.
The other player takes the ball. He's also very nimble. Damn, these Bullton guys don't play around.
Here she comes, the Trebuchet herself. Boom! She kicks the ball to another player. Interception.
Man, she's so fast! They're not going to catch her so easily. I try to keep up but I can only catch up a few yards behind. She kicks the ball high and tosses it to another player. He bounces the ball off his head and before it hits the ground, Heather was already there to receive it. Nice, she distracted the players chasing her by passing it to another player, only to have them pass it back.
Heather shoots for a goal but the Bullton guy blocks it. Ha. This is definitely not the Bullton basketball team who I can trounce all by myself. Maybe I should consider practicing soccer as well.
Oh, I see some of the girls are waving at me from the bleachers. Those are my groupies. They always show up to my games and even some of my practices. They're like my personal cheerleaders, he he. I blow them a kiss. One of them faints. Yeah, right, stop kidding around.
I think I'll impress them a bit. Let's see what potential I have in a real soccer game.
Bullton has the ball and they pas it back and forth. Ha, are you copying Heather's earlier strategy?
As they pass the ball back, I intercept the ball before it reaches the next player. I run with everything I have. Two guys are the only ones who can catch up to me. One to my left, one to my right. Oh yeah? I kick the ball as hard as I can forward. If she's the Trebuchet, call me the Wrecking Ball because I'm going to smash that goalies face!
The ball crashes against the guys chest, but he managed to catch it. Damn, I nearly killed the goalie during friendlies, but this guy is like a wall. Literally, he's so fat. Oh... maybe that's why he's the goalie. He he.
Once again, Bullton has the ball and I try to intercept, but when I arrive in the what I thought was the next pass, the receiver just floors it. I didn't expect this as I give chase, but Heather is already on her way. She's so close but he won't give up the ball so easily. She gets in front of him but he kicks it back and passes it to the guy behind who passes it to another player whose closer to me. I chase after him but he's about to pass it. I slide in to kick it, but I end up kicking his foot and he trips.
The whistle blows. Ah, dammit.
== Heather POV ==
"Be careful, Rudy." I tell him.
"I know. I wanted to kick the ball with a slide."
"Yeah, I saw that, but still pay attention. I'm just glad you didn't get a foul."
"Alright, alright. I'll be careful next time."
We both head back to the field. Man, these Bullton's are tougher than I thought. Quite smart too. Even Rudy is having some trouble dealing with them. Come on, Heather, don't give up. You can do this.
The ball is ours now as one of our players are heading for the goal. Two opponents are on his tail and a third one coming from the side. He passes it to me and I receive it. With all my might, I run forward as the goal gets closer. I'm being attacked by another player. Man, he's fast. I kick it to my left to another player but it's intercepted. In no time, they're already passed a yard. Who is that guy? He's so quick.
Rudy's on him and the opponent is intimidated by him. Must be because he's quite tall. Whatever the case, the guy can't do anything as Rudy snatches the ball away from him. He kicks it and I stop it with my chest. The ball bounces into an empty spot and one of our players takes it. He's got two more opponents after him. Oh no, he was surprised by one suddenly appearing in front of him. He panics and kicks it out of bounds and the referee blows the whistle.
I run up to him, "You okay?"
"Yeah," he says. "That guy came out of nowhere."
"Just hang in there. They're quite tricky."
This keeps going on for the first half. We can't figure them out. They're so tricky but we're no slouches either as we manage to give them a workout. Despite all their tricks, they haven't managed to reach our goal line. but at the same time, we haven't managed to score a goal either. That goalie is like a bulldozer, he'll take anything coming his way.
The second half begins and we continue this fight. It's still the same deal as before. They keep being tricky and surprise us whenever they can, but they can't manage to get close to the goal. At least, not until now.
One of the players has the ball and Rudy goes for him. The opponent kicks the ball straight up into the air. Everyone is anticipating the ball coming down, but Rudy is so tall, he'll get it for sure. He jumps up into the air and aims to headbutt the ball, but he misses! What? Another opponent kicks the ball forward. Now they're heading towards the goal.
We chase as much as we can but the opponent had a head start. He kicks the ball toward the goal but it hits the side and bounces out of bounds.
I run up to Rudy.
"DAMN!" he yells.
"It's okay, Rudy."
"Are you kidding? I just embarrassed myself. How did I miss the ball? I should've kicked it or something."
"It's okay, Rudy. Just relax. How about you sit down for a moment."
"No, I'm going to score a goal tonight!'
"Calm down, you're trying too hard. Just get some Gatorade and take a breather, alright?"
"No. I came here because you can't afford to replace me, remember?"
"So far it's not going too well for either team. I think we can hold them off until you calm down."
Man, he's trying so hard. I can plainly see he's giving it his all. He really is serious about sports.
"You're right," he says. "Let me sit down and recuperate."
