"What's up with Miles and your brother?" I ask Chloe on our way to lunch.
I couldn't concentrate in class after the conversation between Miles and Nick.
What happened between the two?
"What do you mean?"
"Earlier, your brother and Miles had a talk but the tension was so thick, you could literally cut through it with a knife." I state.
"Well, I don't really know much and Nick doesn't talk about it either. They had been best of friends since they were little. They literally did things together but suddenly one day, they stopped talking to each other. They stopped hanging out, and each time you see then together, it was in a brawl."
"Just like that?"
"Just like that." She repeats.
"And you don't know why?" We were nearing the cafeteria.
She shakes her head.
"Like I said, Nick didn't talk about it and he'd throw a fit anytime Miles' name was mentioned at home."
"What happened?" I mutter to myself.
"You wouldn't believe it." A girl in front of us pulls her friend close as she talks.
"What?" Her friend asks.
"Miles and Nick are having a fight in the cafeteria." I hear her say.
What?
"What? Really? They haven't talked to each other in like years!" The other squeals.
They weren't exactly quiet.
"From what I hear, they're fighting because of a girl."
What?
"A girl? I have to see this." They both rush to the cafeteria.
"You don't think-" Chloe begins.
"Oh god." I pull her hand and hurry us to the cafeteria.
Truly when we got there, a crowd has formed in the left corner of the cafeteria.
I hurry there and I push my way through.
"You sick bastard!" Nick shouts and Miles laughs.
"This is so fun." Miles says when he stops laughing.
Nick already has a bruised hand, while Miles had a black left eye and a bruised lip.
It was obvious who did the hitting and who took the blow.
The brown haired guy I saw with Nick the other day was holding Nick back.
I assume he's his friend.
"You are crazy Miles. I don't want you anywhere her!"
"Or what Hart? What are you going to do about it huh?" Miles puts his hands in his pockets. "If I clearly remember, you couldn't do anything about Elsa, so I don't see how she's different."
"You asshole!" Nick somehow escapes his friend's hold and rushes to Miles.
He grabs Miles' collar and punches him.
This is getting out of hand.
Nick's friend tries to hold him back but somehow he keeps getting out of it.
I hurry to his side and I grab his arm.
He pushes me away without effort and I almost fall down.
I stand right and I walk towards them.
"Nick, stop!" I shout and everything goes silent.
Literally.
Nick's fist stops mid air and he looks at me.
He pushes Miles away and Miles suddenly laughs, breaking the eerie silence.
"It seems you are enjoying this." Nick states calmly.
"Of course I am." Miles replies. "Who am I if I don't enjoy it?" He smiles and continues.
"I'm seriously dying to see how this unfolds." He smiles, looks at me, and winks.
Something about that wink made me shiver. I suddenly felt cold.
Really cold.
Nick takes my hand and leads us towards the exit of the cafeteria.
Everyone gives us way and they stare at us.
Great.
Just what I needed.
We walk out of the cafeteria and we walk for a while before I finally force my hand out of his hold.
He stops and faces me.
"What was that about?" I ask him.
"You should stay away from him." He states.
"I asked what that was about not your opinion on if I should stay away from him or not." I fold my arms together.
"Raven, that guy is bad news."
"Is that why you hit him?" I ask.
"He was talking shit about you!" He suddenly shouts.
He closes his eyes and takes a deep breath.
He opens them again and they look darker.
"I'm sorry, I'm just frustrated." He apologizes. "He was talking shit about you and I couldn't just stand there and watch him do it." He says more calmly.
But those dark eyes and calm voice didn't faze me.
"You could have just walked away. It's none of your business."
"It is my business damnit! Raven listen," He takes a step towards me. "Miles is a bastard. You need to stay away from him. He's sick, he's violent, and-"
"And you aren't?" I interrupt him.
"Raven he's different-"
"How is he different? Huh? Nicholas, you hit him!"
He takes a deep breath before he speaks up.
"Just stay away from him okay?"
"I don't want to." I put my hands in my blazer's pockets. "You should mind your own business."
"This isn't about minding my business. This is about your safety, your life's at stake if you are with him."
"It's still not your business." I shrug.
"Would you just listen to me? Just drop the shitty privacy crap and listen to me okay? Please."
I stare at him. His eyes looked frustrated and tired.
His hair was rough like he'd run his hand through it a thousand times. And his hand looked pretty bruised.
"No." I state.
"What?" He says in disbelief.
"You or nobody is going to tell me who I can or can't be friends with."
"You have got to be kidding me." He says and runs his bruised hand through his hair.
"Believe me Nicholas, I'm not."
I turn and head towards my next class, forgetting about lunch.
