Jin Lin's brain was moving at light speed trying to recall how to effectively deal with an utryon. If this was in-game all he would have to do was summon his green flame and burn the creature to death but reality was far different.
Having come face to face with this beast he was genuinely frightened. Recalling the fact that this beast solely relied on its sense of smell and hearing, Jin Lin's gaze looked around for something to distract it from the sleeping Fen Hao who seemed to be dreaming about something pleasant.
Jin Lin saw a rock on the ground and didn't hesitate to lower himself down and pick it up. As he slowly lowered himself to the ground the creature followed him down growling in an intimidating manner as its mouth opened wider.
At some point, its teeth were right in front of his nose making him freeze in place. He almost cried out tears of blood wondering if this was some sort of strategy, teasing the prey before making a move.
Jin Lin suddenly threw the rock across the cave successfully grasping the creature's attention. It leapt up in the air reinstating its invisible state. While the creature was looking for what was making noise, Jin Lin summoned the novice weapon supplied by the system but he was soon disappointed.
It was a low-grade arming sword barely sharp enough to cut his finger. In his hands, it was equivalent to having a wooden sword and here he was expected to defend people with such trashy equipment.
'System, isn't there anything better than this.... I mean did you guys seriously have to be this frugal?' he asked the system in his head as he vigilantly watched the creature that had reappeared at the opposite end of the cave.
'If the user thinks this equipment is trashy he can just give it back. Our company is not in the business of charity,' replied the system in a soft yet imperative tone.
Jin Lin, "....."
There were a few times that he had been left speechless but this was the first time a system made him dumbstruck. This system was basically designed to be an antagonist.
The creature seemed to figure it had been tricked so it made a turn around sniffling in the air for its prey. Unfortunately, it caught a whiff of the snoring Fen Hao which meant Jin Lin had to lure it away. He deliberately called out, "Hey!" in a loud voice that echoed in the empty cave.
The utryon abruptly turned its head and growled while looking in his direction. Having been provoked it lunged forward and swung its long arms in Jin Lin's direction. Jin Lin slightly arched backwards barely escaping the vile creature's claws. It seemed the speed of the utryon was also faster in reality or maybe it's because he was just slower.
Jin Lin took another step back as he activated his pyrokenisis skills but the flames didn't spread to his sword. To be precise, nothing actually happened. Thinking he had done it wrong, Jin Lin swung the short arming sword slashing at the creature but to his surprise, the beast vanished causing his sword to cut air. A vexed Jin Lin took a step backwards and gazed at the sword in his hand with a flustered look.
'System, why can't I use my skill when it's already at level three?' He asked the system as he stood in a ready stance scanning around for that bastard that had decided to perform a disappearing act at the climax of the show.
'User can use his skill. Use your hand but at your current level, you can't transfer the azure flames onto animate objects. Even if the user could, this low-grade equipment won't be able to support such a function,' replied the system wondering if this player had truly experienced Gods of Equino or someone else was playing his account otherwise what else could explain his level of cluelessness?
Jin Lin heard the whooshing sound of claws striking in his direction so he ducked down and thrust the sword on an inside stance. It seemed the arming sword was sharp enough after all because his thrust effectively cut the abdomen of the creature as a stream of green blood flowed out from the wound.
The cut would have been deeper but because the creature had hurriedly dodged in time it only resulted in a flesh wound. The utryon shrieked as it put some distance between them giving Jin Lin enough time to try and summon his flame skill on his hands. A beautiful azure flame appeared at the centre of his palm which was good but something seemed off about the size.
It's like when one buys a dinner table on amazon at a low price only to find out when they deliver it that the entire dinner table is fitted inside a tiny box. That's when they realise they had been scammed into buying a dinner table for a dollhouse. The very same expression the scammed customers would have is the same expression Jin Lin had on right now.
The puny flame was the size of chapstick, not even the good quality kind of chapstick but the cheap regular kind.
'This i-is...," he said swinging the arming sword at the creature that had come for seconds, 'level three?'
The system almost wished it could roll its eyes at this user but because it didn't have a physical form it could only snort internally. It put on its best customer service tone like retail workers and said, 'That's because user's level is only at three. I am certain you are familiar with the benefits each level brings from your experience with Gods of Equino.'
Jin Lin couldn't fathom how one is expected to survive two days in this world when they constantly get sabotaged by the Man just as they take one step into Equino.
He was even beginning to doubt if his nerd of an elder brother survived. Maybe he had already been digested by one of these vicious beasts from hell.
